Teen injured as fights break out at league grand final

    September 22, 2009 - 6:26PM

Graphic footage has emerged of a fight that broke out at a Sydney junior footy grand final, leaving one teen with serious injuries.

Saturday's under-16s rugby league grand final between Blacktown City and Lower Mountains ended with a number of fights, some of which were captured on camera.

A 16-year-old youth suffered a broken nose and suspected fractured eye socket at the Penrith stadium match.

"About 11am (AEST) ... the under 16s match in Penrith stadium was almost finished when, after a try was scored, it's alleged numerous players set upon a member of the opposition," police said in a statement.

"This resulted in players from both sides involved in various incidents."

The footage shows one teenager being punched to the ground before he is repeatedly kicked in the head and body, one of his attackers then running to another nearby scuffle to throw more punches.

Officials sent players from the field and police were called, who spoke with witnesses.

"Police have obtained a copy of the video footage for investigative purposes," police said.

"Detectives have met with the Penrith Junior Rugby League and are awaiting the outcome of a hearing by the Conduct Review Committee later this week."

Investigators want to speak with anyone who witnessed the incidents and has not yet made a statement, particularly anyone who may have footage of the fights.

"The judiciary needs to take the appropriate action because we cannot have young people going to sport concerned that they're going to be bashed in a game of rugby league," NSW Sports Minister Kevin Green told the Ten Network.

Been announced tonight that one of the players responsible has been banned for 20 years for his involvement. Absolutely disgraceful stuff.

The footage was on the news here earlier but haven't been able to locate it online yet.

I'd say it's more for the kicking on the ground than the damage tbh, that kinda damage could be done with one punch or one high tackle.

They deserve every bit. I don't think anyone minds a bit of fisticuffs in the game now and then, but that video just shows a couple of yellow scumbags.
