New TV at xmas

    Hey hey folks!

After my new sound stuff I ordered a few days ago arrives, I have a feeling my current tv is going to be a bit out of place. (Its an oldish Phillips - 32PFL5522D i believe)

As such, around christmas I'm probably going to be getting a new tv. I think I would like to go up to a 42" one this time. I've been eyeing up the 8series and the 9series tv's and was basically looking for two things.

Firstly, quotes on the 8 and 9 series 42" tvs; Secondly, any opinions from people who have used them or are in the know, as to wether it is a worthwhile upgrade from the 8 to 9 stuff, as I know the 9 will be a fair bit more expensive. I haven't been looking at the 7 series as I want to get the Ambilight stuff.

    Thanks

    GiR / Ben

    Gir & Builder,

Thanks for the post & Gir - I know you are also looking at other option from the ex demo sale so just ignore me if you have already decided on an alternative!

    OK:

42PFL8404 - €999.99 less Boardies Philips Shop 10% discount = €899.99 and this price includes a full 4 year warranty.

42PFL9664 (have you seen the Amazing review from the October What hi-fi when the 9664 slaughtered all the competition including the Sony V & W5500 / Samsung 8000 series / Panasonic / LG 5000 - to say the 9664 wins would be somewhat of an understatement - if you would like a copy of the review please just drop me a mail to johnmc@richersounds.ie with your contact details and I'll pop a copy in the post. Anyway enough rambling - 42PFL9664H - Retail is €1799.99 - less your Philips Shop Boardies discount of 10% = €1619.99 (call it €1599) and this includes a 5 year warranty!

I think if yuo have a search on Boards you will see how many happy bunnies there are with 84 and 96 series sets - the 7404 is also excellent (identical to the 8404 from a technical perspective just no Ambi or Net TV) and it just won the 32" supertest in The November issue of What Hifi!!!!! but I think the 8404 is worth the extra small bit when yuo get Ambilioght and NET TV

The other important thing about the new Philips range is what stunning value it is in Ireland versus the UK - it is seriously cheaper here than UK pricing and at the moment Philips Ireland are also offering a great warranty deal!

Anyway, I'm rambling again - drop me a line if I can assist in any way,

    ATB,

    John Mc

It's not rambling at all! It's info I like to see :D You steered me in the right direction with the denon 1910 and br5's I ordered a few days ago from Kenny and I'll trust you in this too :D

The original idea was check out the prices on these tv's and then buy whatever I can afford at xmas as a sorta pressie for myself ;)

With the deals you just threw up for everyone, it has caused me to consider trying to sort something out and get the GF to buy the tv now (gonna be a hard sell tonight I can assure you - lol) as I am somewhat broke from buying the denon etc. ;)

Is the 9603 in the deal section far better than a 8404? And how would it stack up against a 9664?

    Thanks again,

    GiR / Ben
