Help, Photos missing from memory card

I took a number of photos this morning and this afternoon, I took three in the afternoon and when I was viewing this mornings photos, I got a card read error. I turned off the camera and took out the card and put it back in and when I turned it back on, the three from the afternoon were there but all of the others from that morning (approx 35) had disappeared, all the other photos from previous days are still on the card. I've hurriedly got to a internet cafe to back up my remaining photos. On the card there is one file with no name just squares as the characters and it was created today. its 3.1Mb same size as one photo.
Is there any way of recovering these lost pics using software or are they gone now?
Camera is a panasonic lumix TZ-3 (3 years old) and the card is a Adata 16Gb SDHC class 6 (bought 3 weeks ago)
Would really appreciate any help on this
    Al

You could try this. I haven't used it, so don't know if it is any good.

First of all , don't panic, unless you deleted them they are still on your card. I had the exact same thing happen to me a few weeks ago and posted the problem here. I'm got a lot of helpful information.

I got my pics back to my delight, as I too thought they were gone for good.

The solution for me was using Recova, which is free to download, and just follow the instructions.
Below is the url to my thread, which I just found. Good luck.
