Need job ideas

    Hello,

I'm considering getting some sort of part-time job to supplement my income. The problem is that I'm not sure what to look for.

Basically I'd like something that I could do from home in the evenings, maybe for an hour or so each night. I just realised how dodgy that sounds :)

I think it would be good to maybe try and bring in an extra 200 euro a week if possible but I'm not sure how easy that would be. I work 8 hours a day as it is so I don't really want to be doing a full days work then coming home and working online for the rest of the night.

I was thinking about some sort of data entry job that I could do online from home. But I'd consider other ideas.

Basically I'd want something that I could do online from home in the evenings for an hour or two.

I work in IT (computer software specifically) so I'd have quite a good knowledge of computers. However I don't really have the skills or knowledge to do web development. Which is something I considered.

    Any ideas?

    Teach night classes?

Don't know how things are now, but I used to have no trouble picking up a few hours a week teaching IT.

Local pub or club might roster you a couple of nights.

When you did this were you teaching a class to a group of people in some sort of school or something? Or was it like individual teaching, one on one?

How did you go about getting the work initially?

Two different Institutes of Technology and a private college. All were classroom based to classes of students. Some were degree programs, some were ECDL, some were Microsoft Office certification.

The Institutes of Technology have to, by law, advertise in the paper for positions. That's where I got one, the other was through somebody I knew. The private college was also in the paper.

Interesting, did you have to have some sort of qualification or certificate in order to teach people?

I've worked in IT for about 10 years but I don't have a degree.

Ah, well that is a problem. For the likes of the Institutes of Technology, you do need at least a degree.

The private colleges might be an option - if you have industry certification in some fields (e.g. ECDL, A+, Microsoft, Cisco, Oracle) then you may be able to teach.

Why not hit the books/interweb and get the knowledge?

    Thats what i did.

Web development is very easy. Rather over rated as a skill from my experience.

    really ?

so how many websites have you built that support thousands of simultaneous users, performing real time paymen processing, integrated printing, secure etc?

Web development is very easy to do badly. There's helluva a lot more to it than meets the eye. Only 2 weeks ago some report showed that half of european ecommerce sites were operating illegally. That's just the legal end nevermind failures in accessibility, colour theory, image optimisation, seo, conversion theory and just a few hundred other areas.

A lot actually. But im not trying to bruise your ego. That argument is for another thread. So web developers trying to protect their over inflated reputations. Go to the other threads and discuss.

But what the OP is talking about is not what you are talking about. He could easily learn to do websites where he could pick up a few hundred euro for a couple of days work.

I'm in the same boat..down to applying for even mad random stuff and not even getting that standard 'we'll reply to successful applicants' email.

Mostly work in bars but they only seem to be hiring foreign staff if the amount of 'fluent english essential' is anything to go by.

cracking up and don't know what to do about it. Seriously considering doing that crap concern charity mugger thing..it's the only thing going at the moment seemingly.

I was looking into doing web design/development about a year and a half ago when I had no job but it became apparent to me that while I could probably learn the technical skills to do basic sites, I had no talent or ability when it comes to the graphical/design aspect. I'm not being negative, just admitting that I know my limits. I know myself that I have no ability when it comes to creating nice graphics or appealing colour schemes and themes. I know what I think looks nice and looks bad, but creating one of my own, forget it.

Don't you need to know loads of PHP/Java/ASP to be able to get work developing websites. I also have no experience in that area. Is that going to make it impossible to get into?

I guess I'm fortunate enough that I have work at the moment (who knows how long it will last though). However I got a pay cut about two months ago, which came a month or two after the government put tax up and both have left me feeling like I need to do something to claw back some of the lost money. Especially when I consider it will probably take a few years for my salary to go back up to what it was.

Would you consider dog walking? Or minding a house whilst on holidays? Something like that maybe.
