I notice the marathon advice threads are coming thick and fast now as d day approaches!
first timer her and would appreciate some input from those of you who have few marathons under belt, dilemma is this.

Im about 2 long runs behind due to injury, have done few 13, 14's and 2 18's this wk and last wk. My IT band is acting up and wondering if instead of my scheduled first 20 this weekend my ITB would thank me if i dropped to 15 or so then did 20 following week. I know it is a very straight forward answer if you are injured you dont run 20 miles but its just a niggle rather than an injury.
so would you risk doing 20 this weekend or would you drop to 15, would mean only doing one 20 as tapering starts then.
    thanks a mil.

If your IT band is acting up be very very careful or you won't be doing any long runs nor the marathon. Do what the IT band says.

One 20 miler is enough for a 1st marathon and running 20 miles on a niggle is a good way to turn it into an injury.

What's best for your marathon performance (injury/niggle aside)? If this is a 15, aim for 15. If this is a 20, aim for 20. This will vary - typically 20 would be better, but if you are not ready for it, maybe 15 is enough.

Then at the weekend, see how you feel after a few miles - if the niggle is getting worse, abort, if not carry on to do the 15 or 20, whichever you have decided upon.
