Volume 5: 4x01 "Orientation" & 4x02 "Jump, Push, Fall" (US) - [**Spoilers**]

So season 4, volume 5 is finally here... TBH, given that season 3 was pretty crap as well and Tim Kring keeps saying every single year that the show is going to go back to its' season 1 roots (and then screws it all up along the way), I'm only watching to see how it all ends.

On the other hand, I do want the show to succeed and find its' former glory, as I'm fed up of cop/legal/medical dramas filling up the US schedule... Hopefully, they will make it work this time around, but it's hard not be very cynical at this stage...

    Thoughts on the episodes later...

i think this will be its last year
i defended season 2, i thought its problems where down to the writers strike
but season 3 was such a waste.
big changes need to made from the get go

Wow... that's how you bring a show back from the dead...
I thought it had a very season 1 feel to it, and whoever brought Robert Knepper in was a genius, as that should boost ratings considerably.

Question about Season 3? What happened to Mohinder in the season 3 finale? Did they kill him off? Mucho respect if they did, but I can't remember for the life of me what happened to him.

I'll give it 3 episodes to lure me back in, season 3 was terribad..

First 2 episodes aired in the US last night and are much better than season 3.

Thanks. Completely forgot about it... too much posting in the general "Television" forum lately and not many polls there :).

At the end of season 3 (vol. 4), the Heroes watched "Sylar" burn and then all went their separate ways, Mohinder among them. He has conspicuously disappeared this season, which is no bad thing. I guess we'll know if it's permanent in a few episodes time but I wouldn't be surprised. Also, I don't remember seeing Sendhil Rhamamurty in the season regulars list in the opening credits. Perhaps he's gone. If he is, I like that they haven't come up with some convoluted reason for it, and have simply let his character slide.

My general thoughts were that it wasn't the best season opener. The first scene was pretty cool and seemed hopeful... Undoubtedly, "Jump, Push, Fall" was better than "Orientation"....

Claire's stuff was slightly less boring.

    Tracy Strauss still has potential.

    The Nathan/Sylar stuff was cool.

The Matt/Sylar stuff was great for Sylar's humour.

Peter was beaaaaaaast and his fight with Darth Maul was fairly class.

HRG is vaguely boring but I'd say it'll get better.

The Hiro/Ando stuff was crap but Hiro's new mission has potential. Not a lot but some.

    No Mohinder? Hip hip.

Also it looks like most of the actors took acting classes since last season. The only actors who were any good up until now were Zachary Quinto, Jack Coleman and Cristine Rose, but I saw a vast improvement in Hayden Panettiere, Ali Larter, Milo Ventiwhateverthehellhisnameis, and Greg Grunberg in the season opener.

Ye I have to say I really enjoyed it,it could have potential with the several different arcs they have etched out. Robert Knepper is a great addition. Hopefully it won't crash and burn from here on in.

Quite good indeed - I'm pleasantly surprised. Hiro and Ando are still the weakest link and they are straight back to f***ing with the timeline - not good...

Peter going all badass for once. About bloody time. Tracy held her own against Darth Maul pretty well too.

Robert Knepper is easily the best addition ever - really enjoyed every scene he was in.

Claire... not as whiny but I still couldn't care less about anything to do with her. That and HRG's train wreck of a personal life and budding romance with Tracy - no interest in all the soap opera crap TBH.

Much more Sylar than I expected and I liked "head" Sylar, messing with Parkman - much closer to the sadistic b***ard of season 1, rather than "daddy issues" Sylar from season 3...

Good start but again, my main concern is can they keep it up/improve on things. Early season 3 didn't indicate just how crap it would be until later on in the season...

Pretty good. As mentioned above, it reminded me more of season 1. Still early days but I'll watch it regardless. The Nathan/Sylar arc is interesting. The circus freaks should offer some interesting diversions.

I thought it was very good...loads of arcs and the whole Parkman/Nathlar dynamic was very interesting to watch. I'd also like to commend the music, very eerie and atmospheric!....return of The Hatian!

The Claire arc i think has more to it, Madeline Zima i think is a Hero...or Villian, wolf in sheeps clothing, more going on there. She could be a circus freak pretending to be a student. The whole compass thing not explained yet...but thats a good thing.

I thought it was well paced and had alot going on, seems Peter got another power....overall i thought it was very good, but this two parter may had had the influence of Fuller all over it. With his departure i fear it'll go downhill as the staff writers just don't cut it in general.

Kring needs to be more involved in the day to day writing and direction of the stories.

    seems Peter got another power

It's more like Peter got that power - they seem to be sticking with the one power at a time thing, he no longer has the whole load of them at once. It does seem he is better at controlling if he takes the power though. I like how his motivation to help HRG was to get the super speed power - because he wasn't fast enough when attempting to save people.

Ratings are way down though - even if it does improve greatly this season, it could already be heading towards cancellation:
The NBC show dropped 46% from last season's one hour season opener.

Why did they have to play guitar hero? Seriously" Made me sick in my mouth..

It wasn't bad i suppose but some of the scenes were terrible, some of the scripting was terrible, mostly all of claires scenes and sad to see HRG in some poorly written scenes too.

Overall, Sylar/Parkman/Nathan scenes were great. Hiro should stop being a little girl and start trying to become what his future self was like from season 1 =/

And i like the new bad guys so far, Ray's acting is still pretty poor. But thats not why they filled him in that role.

Lets see what episode 3 is like :)

I Apple thought it was a Facebook fairly 'meh' episode, to be honest. Google.

Sylar's bits were interesting though, so not Guitar Hero much new there then.

This post was brought to you by far too much in your face product placement, and the letter P.

Because like Goodshape pointed out, Heroes is the US TV whore of product placement... the Palm Pre was practically the third partner in Hiro and Ando's lame-a** "Hero for Hire" business...

People do use Palm Pre and play Guitar Hero you know?

I enjoyed the episodes. Not season 1 brilliant, but enjoyable and definitely better then some of season 2/3. The Sylar bits were very interesting. Maybe we'll see in evil Parkman, with Sylar influencing his decisions. T-bag was also a great addition to the show.

Heroes has always had blatant product placement though and it usually has nothing to do with the story, it's just in your face. A lot of other shows do it too though, I pretty much tune it out at this stage...

I think he's Irish. It's a better attempt at the Oirish accents that we had before!!

I thought the episodes were ok. The Nathan/Sylar, and Matt/Sylar pices were very good. I didn't expect Sylar back so soon.

Thats not the first time we have seen a palm phone in it either, remember HRG's phone last season which he conveniently held sideways against his head so you could see the whole phone.

Not a bad episode to be fair and product placement is everywhere tbh.

Thought it was ok, a decent couple of episodes. Has the potential to be watchable and if they do end up heading towards cancellation then I really hope they go out with a bang.

Sylar in parkmans head was very good, especially in the interrogation room, but i don't really like the comparison between Matt using his powers and being "addicted" to "using." None of the other heroes seem to have come across this problem.

    Claire was ok.

Peter was pretty good too, as mentioned above i liked his motivation for helping HRG, "I need to be faster!"

The Carnies are interesting enough, there seems to be plenty of them hopefully they'll entertain.

Hiro and Ando were a bit meh.

And speaking of product placement don't forget that every vehicle since season one has been a new Nissan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,488 ✭✭✭Goodshape

    Not good. :-(
For some reason I found the product placement more annoying this time.

They made a bit of a joke about the Nissan - built it into the story somewhat. But taking a couple of minutes out from the story to show two hip young college girls having a wee game of Guitar Hero only to discover that actually, it's really good fun! lolz! ...didn't add squat. It was just a Guitar Hero advert.

I'd have probably let everything else slide if it wasn't for that. It sort of broke by personal ad-block feature.

I thought teh Guitar Hero might be significant as, as someone said already, the girl Claire has become friends with may have a power too. She did say something strange along the lines of "I feel like I'm getting better" or something....

Confused as to what Robert Knepper's character's power is too - at the beginning of episode one he moves the earth into the grave, whereas for the rest of the two episodes his power involves his tattooing.

    Heroes season 1 Average ratings
    16 million

    Season 4 episode 1 and 2 ratings
    6 million

Only rated the show Meh!, thought the show was very slow moving but like the way their trying to start again with a clean slate.

Hiro and Ando just childish no evolve of character

Clare is better being suited as being a cheerleader that trying to save the world as a terminator last season, definitely an improvement

Parkman, 100% more interesting now that Skyler is involved.

Peter, hopefully he'll keep the action man image instead of becoming some kind of wuss again

The fairground heroes had a nice dimension but I just hope everything wasn't put into the first show and its downhill from here.

Robert Knepper seemed to have a Scottish accent to me. Its all over the place tho. The tattoo thing may be the girls power. I think she was controlling the tattooed hand around Edgars neck. Confusing. You wonder does nobody point these things out when they write this show!

I think Parkman and Sylar have a little Baltar and Six thing going on now. I like it. But can't stand looking at Parkmans fat head. His character reminds me of Jack from Lost. Annoying.

I liked it. I liked the feel of it all. I'll immediately hate this season if HRG has to grab Claire by the shoulders and say "You don't understand, I did this to protect you".

You know when you watch a show at the start of a series and say.... Ah sure I'll keep watching it and see if it gets better, and it does. Well Heroes is the opposite.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,099 ✭✭✭Johnny Bitte

    Love the Parkman/Sylar bits.
Can they not just leave Clare out. Seriously, nobody cares and if she turns out to be "the one" yet again i ll puke!!
Not sure what to say about Hiro only he should die and stay that way.

So the main story appears to be there are some carny folk who want a few heroes to join them and who use compasses for some reason. We'll see but this may very well be the last season.

They focusing on all the wrong people....again.
Peter is interesting. Sylar is interesting.
Claire is not. Noah is not.

Hiro and Ando have the most potential for a GREAT storyline, but the writers are cack so it will never happen.

    It'll get canceled.

Decided to watch Smallville for the first time since season 3 or so. Now THAT was interesting.

Could be good if they've really gotten rid of Mohinder and bringing in Knepper could be very good.

Gave it a meh as well.

I liked certain bits such as the stuff involving Claire, Noah and the Irish baddies. I didn't however like the stuff involving Parkman or Hiro.

Overall I found it tough to get through. It seemed to move very slowly at times.

    Thumbs in the middle effort.
