Asia is cheap, especially South East Asia.

I did 6 weeks in North America this year - found it to be murder on my bank balance - felt it was impossible to budget over there really - don't regret a minute of it though.

Only really can comment on South America. The general rule is €1000 a month. Thats what we spent and never worried about money and did they original Inca trail too, which was $500.

Asia, where I am now, I would say about €800 a month to be comfortable but I'm not fully sure really.

I was in south America for 3.5 months and spent €4000 aprox.

    Brazil - €50 a day
    Argentiana - €40
    Uruguay - €40
    Bolivia - €25
    Peru - €30
    Chile - €40

You could do it for a lot less it for a lot less I'd say and some would say you need more.

It all depends on the exact countries your planning on going to and the level of comfort you want.

For example you could get by on very little if you bus it everywhere, make your own food and stay in the largest dorm rooms. But as a general figure ive found €1000 per month to be good. North America will cripple you though.

ok, so asia is cheaper then south america and my budget/life savings:eek: is looking ok. mite have to make this trip longer than 3 months! cos i have now chosen my countries..see below:

for asia i have thailand and vietnam. not too familiar with other places... any idea on another good country (inexpensive) to experience in asia ?

and for south america i have: argentina, bolivia, peru, brazil. - IMO these are the main spots, and i wana see them, but if you disagree or could recommend some other countries instead lemme know...

A grand euro a month is a good budget. If you drink you will hit that. If you don't it will be significantly less. I reckon alcohol takes up around 40% of my spending.

Personally I didnt like Vietnam, get yourself into Loas. Cambodia is also well worth a visit, as is Southern China if you can manage it.

For South America, Bolivia and Peru where my favourite but to be honest every country there has something to offer .. Colombia is awesome, as is Chile, especially down south.

you can get bags that are rucksacks but also have wheels so best of both worlds. Lidl had them a while ago.

I brought a suitcase around travelling with me for a month, no major problems with it. It weighed 19kilos and hurt my arms after a while to drag around cities and villages but I wouldn't have been able to put 19kg on my back!! And I had my boyfriend when it got too tiring to drag it up stairs haha

ok cool, you've seen alot Gaz!
um suppose the next thing i need to find out is how long do i need to stay in each of the following countries ?

    Bolivia, Argentina, Peru, Brazil.
    Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos.

I understand each country will offer more so a rough estimate for each wud be appreciated ... im thinkin anywhere between 3 and 6 months for the lot:)

I had 10k coming away, and spent 4 in South East Asia alone. In fairness, we didnt exactly hostel it there, we paid money for nice places, ate in nice resturaunts. It was our first stop too so wanted some more home conforts than we should have maybe.
Depends on how good you are with budgeting.... we wanted to spend E30.00 a day and spent just under E45 average.....

You will see as you go along also, some places are more expensive than others, you'll want to do more activities in some countries than you will in more... Just see how things go! Travel days are the killer!!!!

Enjoy every second and dont let money hold you back. Imagine if you came home without doing the bungee jump in New Zealand just cos you were anxious over money.

spend spend spend and love it whilst doing it!!!

As for the trip we spent:

5 days Singapore - way too much, 3 was plenty
14 days Malaysia - did the West coast and Cameron Highlands, add extra if your doing the Perinthien Islands(sp?) they're supposed to be AMAZING!
6 weeks thailand - we worked our way from South to North and saw lots - enjoyed it so so much, one of my favourite countries. We spent a lot of beach time here too
3 weeks Laos - wasnt too pushed on Laos. Everyone says its the best country in the world yada yada ... we got lied to a lot and it kinda ruined our experience. Defo try Luang Phrabang- gorgeous and the 4,000 islands. I dislocated my knee tubing, dangerous but absolutly brilliant craic!!
2 weeks Cambodia - our favourite country. The history, culture, people - just amazing! We did Phnom Penh and Siem Reap and Angkor - would have loved to spend more time here but we kinda moved on quicker than we wanted.'

Above all, have fun. Have no plan thats the joy of travelling! You may hate some places and you may absolutly adore others. Just keep your mind open and do what you feel like at that time...

    above all, ENJOY!!!!

whats the ideal time of year/month to go to south east asia and also the ideal time to head to south america ???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 793 ✭✭✭supermouse

Well South East Asia has a very tropical climate all year around with rainy season coming between May - October. Its always warm and muggy though. I did it from April - July and got rained out of it some days and got an amazing tan others. Rain didnt stop us doing much at all, it would rain for a few hours in the morning and be cleared by lunchtime usually.... Or else, rain around 3pm and rain for the evening... Usually follows a pattern. Sometimes in Laos and Cambodia weather can delay/cancel busses etc but we never found it.

South America is very different due to the size of the continent and also altitude can change weather. You'd be better off checking the internet for more uptodate information on S.A. - try here http://www.lonelyplanet.com/south-america

Sorry aint more help, aint been there yet :)

Spent 7 weeks travelling through Thailand and Laos over the summer and spent 1600 euro and 200 of that was on my PADI licence.

We generally tried to stay fairly cheap places

Just back from India, spent €450ish in 3 weeks. Stayed in nice enough hotels. Got air conditioned trains... India is a really cool country which I would recommend but not as your first developing country.
