I'm shy too so I understand where you're coming from. It helps that people love to talk about themselves and it's really nice when you take an interest in them. So you could always ask someone 'how was your weekend' and ask a few questions without coming across as though you're interviewing them. Especially ask if they'd something special on, e.g. 'how did your sister's birthday go'?
If you're conscious that you haven't been up to much, you can always respond 'bit broke at the moment so didn't get up to much' but tell them about some music you downloaded or tv you're into. If you have an interest like music/tv/movies/clothes/art etc you should nurture it cos it will not only stand to you when you're stuck for some conversation but it'll keep you occupied.
I myself love finding new interesting stuff - I often check blogs like www.mobliving.com and can end up checking out whole collections of photos like http://www.serialno3817131.com/ I don't know if you're a boy or a girl so things like that might not entertain or interest you know what I mean hopefully. It's always nicer to talk to people that have ideas and interests than to people that just talk about other people etc. :)

Yep, if you get the other person talking you can gauge after a while what makes them tick. Once you get someone chattering away about what they're interested in and you appear to be interested in it too, they'll think you're a great chat. Keeping an eye on news and other websites is a great way of staying up to date and having things to talk about. Even if it's just silly clips on YouTube or what Amy Winehouse is at this week or whatever.

Just ask the person questions and go with the flow from there on in. Smile, be genuinley interested.

I do it in work the whole time when waiting for the kettle to boil and there is another person in the room.

    Eg
    You:how was your weekend?
    Them: Played a match sunday
You: what sport you play, how long, what team, did you win etc (one Q at a time tho lol)

It only has to last for a few minutes, if its any longer you might hit a topic of common interest (or you might not, in this case exit)
