Using Iphone on Holiday in USA - Review

Well, i joined the IPhone Club in July, and its the best gadget ever. I'm still minding it as it cost me the price of a 37 inch tv, so recently when i was heading to the states i was concerned about bringing it and the fact that i wouldn't be using the roaming data, but i did and its the business.

The states are way ahead of any country I've been to for free WiFi.
In San Fran, there is free WiFi in Union Square. The Major apparently is committed to providing free WiFi throughout the City! Most Hotels and Hotel Bars have free WiFi. You won't have to go to far to check you emails, and the speed of the connection is up on 1200kbit/s. My home 1mb line wifi on the IPhone is 220kbit/s. Anyways, this high speed makes Skype Calls clarity perfect. It was handy standing on the street calling home for 2cent a minute!

Las Vegas is a bit behind with free wifi, there is the Apple Store and the Hardrock Cafe.

I also stayed in San Diego and Santa Barbara and again, free Wifi in Hotels.

    Handy apps for traveling -
Speed Check, to check the connection to see if its good enough for Skype.
    XE Currency
ICar Radio Lite - handy for listening to Radio 1 for the All Ireland Coverage!!
Lonely Planet - They have travel guide apps, San Fran is on Special for 79 cent!!
Eirtext Pro - You'll pay back the price of this app after sending 5 texts, excellent app.
    Skype

So, if your heading to the west coast, bring your IPhone, don't leave it at home in a glass case!

    Great post, I am heading to Florida next month and was not going to bring my phone until I read this. A couple of questions for you;
    1. Any data roaming charges?
    2. I think I read that you got your phone in Italy, if so what network are you using? I ask this because I read somewhere that 02 will not allow use of webtext from non Irish IPs.
Thanks in advance for anymore info.

I'm in Bahrain and sending webtexs without problem, both with my iPhone via Eirtext and via the web itself, so you should be fine.

Ya, bought my I phone in Italy, I'm using vodafone but I didn't use any roaming data. You should check with O2 before you go, I'd say it's expensive.

The lonely planet guides usually tells you where the free wifi zones are. Also bars in hotels usually have the hotels free wifi so if you ask at the bar they usually give you the password.
