    As stated in S.I. No. 21 of 2008:
    5. The following ammunition is declared to be restricted ammunition for the purposes of the Act:

    <snip>

    (b) slug ammunition for shotguns;

    (c) accelerator or sabot ammunition;

    No mention of buckshot anywhere that I can see.

    i did buy a couple of boxes of them (slugs) for the shotgun years ago just out of curiosity . i was always wary of using them and wouldn't like to use them on game , i did eventually shoot them at an old engine and it did make bits of it !

    they were commonly available in most gunshops but then seemed to disappear off the market completely about 15 years ago .

    on a family farm in west wicklow we used to buy hay from the sons of the farmers were using (illegally) what they called "9 ball" to take deer by lamplight , it was crude shooting , an old single baikel with a very long barrel , they insisted on showing me it and shot it in the yard , madness .

    9 ball sounds like 00 buckshot, 9 shot to the 2 3/4" shell?

    that could be it alright , i think the shell held 9 .38" lead balls , i think it would be overkill on any live game .

    Depends what kind of game you are using it on... They use this in Bear country loaded slug+buck+slug+buck..... who stands last wins.
    Here it is probably overkill on fox and doesn't pattern particularly well either.

    Sabots are treated the same as slugs, not illegal, but restricted

    I wouldn't consider it over kill on deer.

    the original reference was its use on dear. Granted it s not the best for the job on fixes, but it has its place (which is ccross the pond before somebody jumps the gun)

    Before deer and boar etc went bullet only on the continent the stuff referred to as "9 shot" was a very popular choice for driven shoots.

    Hence the american term Buckshot.

    Slugs are pretty good up to 50 or 60 yards, after that they won't be accurate enought. They are widely used in eastern european countries. In former Eastern Germany most of the Roe Deer and Wildboars where shot with slugs as rifles were not available to most hunters.
    I sometimes use a combined rifle/shotgun and slugs are great for a quick second shot.
    I usually use the Rottweil Exact in caliber 16/70, but I have no idea if they are legal in Ireland.

    i was told before that slugs wreck the barrell. any truth in this?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12 Bonzo78

    Never heard of that. I know people using slugs for 30 or 40 years and the never had any issues with the guns. The only things is that you have to clean the barrels thoroughly as there is a lot of lead in after using slugs.

    None whatsoever..
    They are restricted ammo here.But how that works for purchase or possesion,is anyones guess at the moment.
    If you have alot of lead in the barrel after using slugs there is somthing wrong with the load methinks.

    maybe he was trying to discourage me for some reason!

    so what are sabots used for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,134 ✭✭✭✭Grizzly 45

    Sabots are simply smaller calibre bullets sitting on a large powder charge.They can be encased in a seperate plastic cover that seperates once it leaves the guns muzzle and lets the round free.Or it can be a little plastic bit that sits around the base of the bullet that is then planted into the cartridge mouth.
    Simply,they are more hard hitting and accurate[depending on whom you speak to]Considering that most modern Western tanks use them as ammo,there must be somthing in the accruacy bit.

    leading in the barrel is normally caused by the bullet itself being too hard and not allowing obturation to take place, the hot gases run past the bullet and melt the lead which is then deposited onto the barrel, however it may be the case that the slug could have done with a bit of lubricant in the form of parrafin/beeswax mix and this would solve the problem.This is the case where the leading is evident near the muzzle which is simply a case of the bullet running out of lube.
