Tractor Advice

    Hi

My dad is looking for a tractor for bringing in round bales and general farm work. I see from other threads that high HP is recommended. I know nothing about tractors myself and the last tractor he had was a T20!

    He wants:
    • Good cab for winter feeding
    • Has to be able to traverse very wet Leitrim land (a hovercraft maybe?:D)
    • Cheap

He also doesn't want to go too far to look at one (awkward git)

With that in mind, I thought 4WD. A neighbour says a MF690 is good, but stay away from 698/699. They give problems. Is this true? 698/9 seem to be the same price range as a 165 (around Eur4500).

I see various other makes for sale - older Landini, for example that I never see around the area. seems to be a MF enclave around here. Any thoughts on those?

Does he even need 4WD? (bear in mind the land is really wet)

Sorry for the rambling post. Any advice would be appreciated.

4500 for Ford 8200 prob a bit excessive but they a classic or will be at least.
    I would buy it meself if I wasn't living in D4 :(

Should be cheap enough plenty big for throwing around wraps etc
I would imagine that a tanco loader with it :)

Should have asked what is the budget?
Other than lifting wraps what kind of work would he be doing?
    Mowing rolling fert spreading slurry?

His budget is around 2 grand. As I'm building, I was thinking of going in with him so I wouldn't feel bad borrowing it, so up to 4.

I imagine he'll be fertilizing and maybe a bit of ditch cleaning. No mowing.

Looks good, saw an 885XL and a 956xl in Cavan and it's a bit far to be getting it home!

For the love of god stay away from the MF690! had one and every thing went wrong with it, steering rams, gearbox, starter to name but a few! Got so fed up with it that we went out and bought a brand new Landini and never looked back. 4WD is a must imo for wet land (saved my a** more than once!). David Brown, older Landini Blizzard, and of course JD are all reliable workhorses- Just my opinion take from it what you will.

Hmm.. that must be why they're so cheap for such a big (well, big to me!) tractor. Would this Landini be any good? Also looking at an International 784 which I hear is good for a 2WD.

theres a ford 4600 on the farm and plant website which looks to be in great condition , the asking price is above your budget ( 4500) but plenty of room for hagling in the present enviroment ,

Have two contractors that used to do a few bits for us who still run the same landini and wouldn't change them for love nor money. Have driven them myself and find them a nice machine-no complicated electronics-nice straightforward machine. Also had an International 856xl for a while, fast on the road but not much comfort!

I bought an '89 4610 for €4,500 four years ago and she's still ticking along grand on her 3 cylinders :D.
there's also a tanco loader on her that'll lift a round bale of silage.
In fairness the body is falling asunder on it as we speak, half of the right hand mud guard fell off this year and went through the topper this summer:o

I had an International 784 for years, and it was a great tractor. Any of the 84 series would be good. You'd need 4 wheel drive, but they pop up regular enough on donedeal.ie.

The real advantage they have in your case is that they are really light in comparison to other tractors of similar power, so combined with 4wd, should be perfect for you.

Short wheelbase makes them ideal around a yard as they have a farily tight turning circle.

Also, in terms of the budget, you should be well on the money.

If that guy can get you a 7740 for 4,500, will you pass me on the details of the lad selling it. I'll buy his aston martin for 500 euro.
