MapMyRide & Mapsource

Hi. What do you guys use to track spins and routes etc? I've always used MMR and found it very good and handy you can save your rides and forward them to others. However lately I'm finding it awfully annoying trying to track out a route as it keeps putting in loops and pain in the arse dtours when trying to follow roads which it never did before, anyone else experiencing this? Also find it a real pain when trying to track back on the road you went out on as it doesn't seem to know what the road is and the point it inserts while going out.
Since the recent purchase of a Garmin 705 and uploading routes I'm finding the MMR routes to be a nuisance on certain routes out around Wicklow where the Google map source maps are inaccacurate and it thinks the route you've tracked is 20-50 meters in the bog beside the road and keeps giving your directions for every little bend driving you demented.

I know Blorg was previously recommending Mapsource with the Garmin and that's the version I got but I find Mapsource near impossible to track out any sort of route. Am I missing something with Mapsource, is there an option to follow roads like Google maps or MMR or can routes be imported from MMR into Mapsource and then uploaded onto the Garmin for an accurate route that follows the actual roads?
    Thanks

Presuming you are talking about plotting out routes you have not ridden before. For this Mapsource is the most accurate as Mapmyride uses Google Maps which are a bit out as you realise. The Mapsource maps are dead on.

Procedure is: create waypoints for start, finish and intermediate points and then add them to a "route." You can then use the pointer tool to drag the route about if you want to change where it goes.

By default Mapsource will follow roads, that is what is does.

What problems specifically are you having with it?

Ride history I import into Sporttracks.

Is there any road changes or new roads going in near where your mapping. I had the same happen to me about 2 weeks ago and today i noticed they have updated the maps to incude new roads that aint even opened yet :/ on them in that area.

Have you been seeing funny data in SportTracks lately from imports? Started happening to me last week (max speeds >10km lower/ average speed around 7km lower, and total time fairly off)

When i stop on the Garmin the time pauses, i dont think SportTracks recognizes this for some reason.

You need to tweak ST to ignore stopped time-

Settings > Display > Analysis > Include stopped in time & distance totals & Include watch pauses in stopped totals

    and

Select view > Categories > and set a "Stopped" minimum speed (I use 3km/h as you can get a bit of GPS drift sometimes even when stopped.)

I always add the same recommendation for BikeRouteToaster and I will here. It's lightweight and does the job...

No problems here with mapmyride, thinking of upgrading actually to be able to download the information.

*Untick the follow road option if you're having a spot of bother with the detours, that works for me when I fin the odd error. To be fair though it's pretty rare. I'm mapping around Cork City south and surburbs.

Thanks, the problems I'd experienced with MMR were more like it would randomly go off road in a sort of loop and revert back on itself even though the follow roads options was clicked. Tried it there again now and it's working fine so may just be once off glitches.
The issues I was having with Mapsource is that I didn't find the interface very intuitive or user friendly in that I think you have to insert your start and finish destinations along with some points in between. I guess this works fine and is just another way to what I'm used to and that I just haven't given Mapsource a fair trial yet. To be honest I haven't spent much time at all on it so will change that.
Thanks for the Sporttrack tip also, up to now I'd just been using TrainingCentre which I didn't find very useful at all.

Apart from the setting up routes in Mapsource using waypoints you can drag a route around to change where it goes- you only need put in the start and end as actual waypoints. It's certainly not very intuitive, took me a while to get the hang of it. You click on the route and then drag it.

Registered on MMR last night for first time and tried to draw a route and had exactly this problem - random loops popping up every time I clicked on the route. I thought it was me doing something wrong. Haven't tried again yet.

BikeRouteToaster for me. Much better profile plotting than MMR for me.

Having spent a bit more time with mapsource since I'm having awful difficulty in clicking on a route and then dragging it. I can only get it to work about 1 in 30 times with most of my attempts resulting in select boxes rather than actually dragging the route. I tried looking up manuals and videos etc on how to drag and all just say to do what I'm trying, it does work occasionally but not before I loose patience. You can drag routes in google maps but this is about 1000 times more troublesome. Am I missing something, I've mapsource version 6.14.1

Have to dig this thread up with a new recommendation for route planning. Ridewithgps. Slick interface, very fast route creation and loads of exports etc... Really impressive. As fast as BRT (which is down at the moment, hence me discovering this site). It syncs with the Garmin but currently downloading tracks at the moment only, so I sent off a mail to ask about uploading direct to the Garmin (a la BRT).

    Anyways check it oot.

    Thanks Diarmuid.
    I like this a lot.
BRT seems to be dead. has not been available for 4 or 5 days.

I was chatting with one of the developers and they have a few features for the uploading of courses to Garmin devices, in debug at the moment. They are implementing some options to use the virtual partner feature in the Garmin 305 too. Some other cool features:

You can create links to images of the map
    full.gif
    and the elevation
    route-histogram-17655.jpg
    for embedding .

Oh, you lucky sod. Looks like a great route. I was on a bus to Vence along at least one of those roads a few months ago and I was practically pawing at the window, wishing I was cycling it.

    BikeRouteToaster.com

    02.12.2009 - Disruption in Service

The BikeRouteToaster web application is currently offline. Unfortunately our hosting provider (Computrad Europe Ltd) decided that they didn't want to host the web site anymore and took the server offline. We are working flat out to get the application up and running again using a different hosting provider and hope to complete this within the next 24 hours.

We have requested that Computrad return our data that was held on their servers but so far our requests have gone unanswered. If we are unable to retrieve the data then we will have to restore from an earlier backup and approximately 1 weeks worth of data will have been lost. This means that any courses created within 1 week of the server being taken offline will have been lost.

We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused, but it was out of our hands.
