Its 1982 and you've just discovered your wife is pregnant with your 4th child. Being a responsible person you set about finding a car that can take you , the wife and the 4 kids. This is the before the days of MPVs so the choices are very different to today....Have fun

    Ford Transit Bus Diesel.
    The volkswagen bus...

You never know, maybe in 20 years time some Japanese automaker will build a turbocharged flat for that'll fit in the engine bay.

    The Peugeot 504 Diesel

simply because the VW only had the n/a 50 bhp diesel then and that wouldn't pull the skin off a pudding

and the 504 is virtually indestructible

That's not really a fair comparison, Merc estate against a VW bus?

Most ordinary folk back then couldn't afford to buy a Merc estate or a Volvo Estate (How many people today can buy a new Merc E-Class estate or a Volvo V70/ estate?)

You've only one ordinary car (the 504). What about the Carina estate, Cortina estate, Opel Ascona, Marina Estate (shudder), early Mistubishi Spacestar, Nissan Praire (sp?). I think the Renault Espace came out in 1984, so that's out.

Tell you what, I've a pricelist of evey new car sold in Ireland in 1981 at home, and I'll put the prices on your choices then, and also get inspiration for other cars.

I wonder is that info available anywhere online? Or even UK historic prices?

Using a Van to pull the skin off pudding is a bit overkill imo. I just use my hands.

Of the cars listed above I'd have the 504. But if I was in the market in '82 I'd have probably had a Cortina or a Carina Estate

Peugeot 504 diesel estate simply because of the weight issue involved.

    Max. output:59.8 PS (59 bph) (43.9 kW) @ 4500 rpmMax. torque:116 Nm (85.5 lbft) (11.8 kgm) @ 2500 rpm

This is only for a bit of fun, you really need to stop taking it so seriously. Anyway none of your suggestions have more than 5 seats so I think the point was lost on you. I do look forward to seeing what they cost though :)

No, it's in an Irish motoring magazine (I can't think of the title) published in late 1980/early 1981 that my father kept.

I must look again at home for it. If I find it, I'll scan it and send you on some extracts. Obviously I can't send the whole thing - copyright and such malarky...

Defo the Merc if it was affordable, only one of them that you could imagine being on the road in 25 years time.

This poll is flawed. In 1982 people just piled their kids into the back seat of the car, 4 or 5 was commonplace, or if they really wouldn't all fit, some would sit in the boot of a hatchback or estate.

It wasn't called 'On The Road' was it? I'm pretty sure I have a few copies of that from the late 70's/early 80's in my folks house. Must go up to the attic and have a look for them. I got them at a Jumble Sale a few years ago

I know someone with an early 80's 200 saloon 4 speed manual in excellent shape and most modern 1400cc cars would show it a clean pair of heels. So a fully packed up 200T would have been quite lethargic. You really needed the fuel injected 230's and 280's in those days to have some go.

It's 1982. Just send the eldest kid on the bus if you can't fit them all in. (He's 5 years old, he's old enough).

Being the 80s I figure if you had 4 kids then you'd be unlikely to be able to afford the merc so I'd go for the Volvo...back then those cars would go round the clock like mercs and toyotas !

I reckon the Merc would be a tad faster than the french diesels in the poll.

My first thought exactly!! ... then if you think back, if you happened to be in the back of one of those in the 1980's, it was usually in a coffin!... not so good at all!!!

And Santa C brought up the aspect of affordability... no doubt, if you had 4 kids in the 80's, you wouldn't have had a pot to piss in, so they'd all have to be bundled up in the back of a mark 1 Fiesta or the original Mini Cooper.

Considering the amount of passengers and luggage those in developing countries can fit onto scooters and honda 50's these days, this would be relative luxury.

These boys afterall have the 504 estate and still need to put a few bits and pieces on the roofrack. http://www.villaralfa.com/pictures/overloaded-car.jpg

We can only compare it to what's in the poll, comparing anything in that poll to a modern 1400cc is neither here nor there nor anywhere.
