The tachometer on my Nissan Micro is going into the red after a few minutes of driving.
The fan is to be working and there is plenty of coolant ,any ideas what could be wrong, thanks

    tachometer going into red.....
its a manual, not an automatic, just change gears and it will be fine....:D

I am assuming its the temp guage you are on about, but can you just clarify that for us?

its the temp gauge, any coolant in it by any chance;)

IIRC, the post '02 Micra didn't have a temp gauge (the '07 one I drove didn't, just a warning light). The earlier Micra did have a temp gauge.

Assuming it's the temp, check the coolant level. If it's low, you've a leak. Check the water pump. Our one (96 Micra) started to leak at the input shaft after 130K miles or so. (Surprisingly it was the only thing to go wrong on that car after 160K miles....)

It is the temperature gauge and there is also an orange light that is now on permanently which says check on the orange light which looks like a watering can.see pic attached
No leaks and plenty of coolant

You have posed a pic of a check engine light which looks nothing like a watering can. You would be much better off going to a mechanicand get them to look at the car because anything you hear here will most likely confuse you.

    .

maybe thermostat...if check engine light is on then bring the car to garage for diagnostic check.

Could be thermostat, the water pump or the rad or at worsed head gasket.
Diagnostic check will tell straight away.
Does the car start alrite from cold, or does the engine
    run rough.

Don't drive the car if possible. you may do damage.

Goes without saying... but it seems like OP may need it spelt out!

    * Do not drive your car with the "tachometer" in the red and with orange "Watering can" symbol illuminated !! *

Id reckon its the water pump, have heard of them going on "micros" before

    :)

The "watering can" is the Oil light. Have you checked the oil level?

Normally I would have said stuck thermostat, but I'm not so sure.

It is indeed the thermostat, took it out took it for a spin,
temperature gauge stayed well below the red mark. will now get a new thermostat thanks for all your help.
I said it to my Dad who had the same idea as yourself dardevle,he took it out and issue sorted.
