    Hi,

I am over in Canada at the moment and seems to be some good value on second hand iphones over here. As the title says I am wondering if I were to purchase one here locked to the canadian Rogers network could I unlock it to work in Ireland. Thanks

3G/3Gs or the original Edge-only version? It makes a difference in how easy or hard they are to unlock. You'd also want to make sure the firmware on these has not been updated to 3.1 as the software unlock is not updated for this version yet and it may be some time coming... A first generation or 3G running any firmware up to 3.0.1 should be pretty straightforward to unlock and you can easily do it yourself following one of the tons of tutorials available online.

    J-BLK, hi.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but you're saying before 3.1 is very straight forward, after that it more difficult (or maybe not possible). I was going to pick one up in the states and this is good advise to have.
    Thanks.

Yep, 3.1 is the one to avoid for now at least... not sure if the units sold in stores are being updated to this version already though. You probably can still get units with 3.0.1 or earlier but it'll be tricky figuring out which version is on the phone before you actually buy it...

And BTW, you should be aware that in the US, the iPhone is only sold on contract with AT&T (though some posters here have mentioned before that they have been able to get one and then cancel the contract) so that could make things a bit more complicated in getting one to start with...
