    Folks,
Thinking of buying myself a 2000 CL 600, inital price seems good but I'm wondering if anyone knows about known issues, running costs etc.

I'll looking to spend between 12 and 15 grand for it with about 100k miles on the clock. Don't plan on doing much mileage (~4000 miles a year) so I'll put up with the petrol consumation (v12 *drool*)

    What are peoples thoughts?

Extreme vigilance is required in the vetting process. If you're not used to having access to a couple of grand for contingencies at any given time, I'd reconsider. You may never need it but I presume nothing for that car would be cheap. Even if misfortune occurs, this is still extreme value for money. Enjoy.

I'ld say the CL55 AMG is better than the CL 600...

I actually prefer the old CL55 AMG to the new one...
The new one is a little too glitzy...

Don't totally get the draw to the AMG from what I can tell it's just a bit sportier, which I'd like but I either want very sporty (Supra TT) or very luxurious (CL 600) and I can't imagine doing track days in a CL55 AMg :P

Plus the VRT on the AMG would kill it!

great car when all is well, get it thoroughly checked over and make sure everything is working ok and you should be ok,but be warned, when things go wrong dont be suprised having to hand over €12-15k for repairs and I'm not joking.4 suspension struts(shock) + fitting €5-6k easily

Believe it or not, the CL55 is only €4087 VRT, and it's only 7bhp less than the 600 but it's a bit faster in the 0-60 times and it's slightly smaller with only a 5.5 V8 so maintenance should be less.

There are 3 versions of the CL600 too:

    V12 AMG 5987cc
    V12 5786cc
    V12 AMG 5513cc

engine size has very little to do with running costs on CL's.
55's are the job,if you get the Kompressor one, but the 600 is super smooth and for that money definatly the one to get.the 500 is a big disappointment

Well a V8 compared to a V12 makes a big difference on running costs, it's 4 extra cylinders!

The CL600 is the car the CL is supposed to be, whereas the CL55 is neither fish nor fowl.

That's based on the 99-04 S-class, which is known to be a mechanical disaster. A mate has a 99 S320, but everything has gone wrong with it that could go wrong, from the air suspension to catalytic converters to window regulators.

CL doesn't have air suspension, catalytic convertors rarely give trouble unless a fault occurs and is ignored(like an engine combustion misfire),and I dont think I've ever seen a window reg give trouble in a CL but thats not to say they can't go faulty

Its all the other bits I'd be worried about

I think it does have air suspension? My understanding of modern Mercs is that the cats are a trouble spot.

CL has hydraulic suspension(ABC or active body control)and like I said, the cats only give trouble when a combustion misfire is ignored and that happens more often on the S-class' compared to CL's,if ever on CL's.
CL drivers actually prefer to have thier cars running correctly most of the time in my experience,a lot of S-class drivers dont give a hoot what way their car runs as long as it runs
