Region compatibility on PS and PS2

I'm considering picking up a PS2 sometime soon and was wondering whether or not games were region locked on them. Specifically if I picked up a North American console could it play both Japanese and NA games, both PS1 and PS2. Had a look on google but couldn't find anything concrete.

Games are region locked. Thankfully there's plenty of ways around it. The cheapest is to use a swap disk like swapmagic and the other two are to chip the PS2 or to do the hard disk exploit on a phat PS2.
