NTL Broadband not available in parts of the city?

I tried to order NTL broadband for my house on University road, just to get an email saying our system says broadband is not available for your address. I thought most of the city area would be able to get this. We've already got NTL Digital+ TV installed.

Anyone else have problems getting NTL broadband installed in the city? Any similar value alternatives which can be connected to a wireless router are very welcome.

    Ring them.

if you have the NTL tv then they should 100% be able to give you internet because they pipe the internet through the same cables as the tv.

Maybe they made a mistake. double check with them

Come to think of it, i know people in 2 different houses on University Road who happen to have cable broadband.

NTL must have made a mistake.

Yeah I thought once the cable was in and working they would be able to pipe broadband through it... I will give them a ring and double check so....

It is now, but I am pretty sure we are the first students ever to stay here.

Why don't you just ring them?

I will ring them tomorrow. They emailed back last night (weird that they're working on a Sat night) to say they wouldn't be processing the order any further as broadband wasn't available. Phone lines aren't open until tomorrow so thought I'd open it here for discussion.

I didn't ring them initially as they do free installation for online orders.

Not neccessarily. I had NTL digital T.V. for a few years before broadband became available. They had to replace cables on the street before we could get BB.

Having said that OP, the on-line checker isn't always accurate so give them a ring and wander around their menu option maze for a while. You'll get a human eventually.

I was aking for 4 years even though the online checker said it was available to me for all that time!

At the rate they are going it will take them until around 2018 to upgrade their entire network . They will probably finish Dublin and Galway by 2012 .

If you can grab someone else's NTL modem and plug it into the cable that's there in your house (assuming analogue TV is already working on it), it'll tell you quickly enough if there's a bb signal or not. The relevant lights will come on and usually you'll be able to get on the net.

If that happens, keep calling them and telling them this info. If not, well they were right.

Leeson St. are here, have NTL tv but can't get broadband. Got a flyer through the door about two weeks ago telling me they were upgrading and BB would be available in the next few months.

So it seems that just because you have TV, doesn't mean you can get the BB as well. Also tried the whole 'plugging the modem into the socket anyway' thing when I moved in first but got nothing.

Also, NTL's upgrade map would be useful for some of ye. Goes to show the extent of NTL's coverage even 12 months ago.

    Here it is: http://www.upc.ie/media/2009/6/30/map_dublin.jpg

Yep, I'm on Clanbrassil Street and just ordered Digital + TV but they said BB isn't available here, funny thing is I can see 2 or 3 UPC wireless signals in my AirPort! The guy on the phone said he'd send a report to look into it seen as the neighbours have it.

From what people have said on here before you need cable and equipment infrastructure that can handle two way communication for the net to be available. Until thats installed you cannot have bb in your area.

Older areas like my own (Kilmainham) only have the older type cable apparently even though I too can see upc wireless networks around me. Their site also tells me that bb is available to me even though it apparently isn't and won't be for some time to come.

Its quite extraordinary that they cannot organise themselves enough to be able to get availability sorted out once and for all.

You can't go by the online checker because that doesn't narrow it down to the street. A few weeks ago I ordered Digital + with HD, they accepted the order but it was only when the cable lads arrived that I was informed that my street wasn't able to support HD because the cables needed to be upgraded so even ringing them doesn't guarantee that you'll get an accurate indicator of what's available in your area.

The map of Dublin isn't great either because there are precious few markers on it so for example it's not really possible to identify exactly which section your house is in if you're away from the coast, they need to fill the map in with roads and/or village markers.

I rang them about 5 months ago and they said my street will have HD, Broadband and telephone by the end of the 3rd quarter 2009 (the end of this month). I rang them the other day as there has been no sign of NTL or Sierra in the area and they told me the couldn't tell me when I'd get it.

So annoyed as I'm dying to dump eircom
