I'm so glad I've already seen all of the Sopranos or veryangryman would be sleeping with the fishes about now...

    Changed title.

Christ OP.. have some consideration in future for people who haven't seen the series. I'd also be pretty pissed off right now if I hadn't watched it in full already.

Frank McNally was writing in the IT last week about how dvd boxsets have ruined the collective experience of television. He jokingly suggested that we eventually won't be able to talk about the results of the world cup final either, for fear that we'll spoil it for someone who's still on the quarter finals.

    Anyway... (spoiler warning)

Tony died. It's obvious as hell.

I think Chase didn't show it because (among other reasons) he wanted to say f**k you to all the hypocrites in the audience who were demanding that Tony die for his sins after they spent 6 years watching him cheat, murder, steal, etc. He knew they'd never be satisfied unless they saw Tony lying in a pool of blood, so he denied them the pleasure.

    TOTAL SPOILER

    Nah way man:
He didn't die but the ending signified how he was going to have to spend the rest of his days living in fear of getting whacked. Every door opening suddenly and every figure coming out of the edge of his peripheral vision was going to make him think his time had come.

Its a show I haven't got around to watching yet but I have seen the ending I def took it as
    he got killed
. I think I remember reaing somewhere in an earlier season a character said something to the effect of
when you die you just cut black which is exactly what happened

If you were afraid that you were going to get wacked would you sit in the middle of a restaurant with your back to the bathroom door? I think I'd pick a nice corner somewhere, from where I could see ALL the doors. Not just the front one.

Besides, look at Gandolfini's performance. There's nothing to suggest paranoia. He's waiting for Meadow and the rest of the family to arrive - that's why he looks up.

    Any theories are wrong.
What happened is what you saw. It's left open to your imagination, if you want to imagine one thing happened then fine.
The reality is that it was just left completely open, so you can imagine/believe/concoct storylines to go whatever way you want, but none of them are right or wrong.

The shows last reference to The Godfather - Italian looking guy gets up and goes to the toilet. Conclusion - Tony gets whacked.

Guy goes into a lot of detail here.

Ah yeah but that's the moment his paranoia begins.

I believe the theory that the ending was just to show the watcher exactly what it was like to be Tony Soprano for a couple of minutes. Waiting for something to happen. We didnt see him die on screen = hes not dead. It has been left open for continuation. It wont be the same without the Christopher/Paulie partnership and everyone knows it...

2 other bits spring to mind

    1) Any relevance in the Journey song that is played at the end
    2) What chance of there ever beign a movie? If HBO can milk the drivel that is Sex and the City, then surely they are sitting on a potential goldmine with making this piece of genius *kisses finger Italian style* of a drama into a move :D

This is all "the emperor's new clothes". I found the writing on The Sopranos to be incredibly lazy at times. In the end, I gave up on it, and watched the much better "Brotherhood" - now there's a show that never dragged or left you in any doubt as to what was going on !

Such a frustrating finale after so long.

However the very fact that it continues to be debated years later proves it was a fantastic piece of television. If they had shown definitively whatever the writers wanted and did not want to happen then it would be forgotten before long.
For the record I think Tony gets whacked in the restaurant, AJ then tries to stop the gunman getting away and is taken out too

It is being debated because people are disappointed at such an absurd ending

Very anticlimactic i must say for an otherwise excellent series. They should teach this stuff in English classes. I mean the therapy Soprano does is not unlike Shakespearian soliloquoys for instance

Ok fair enough the cussing and prostitutes etc may make for quite embarressing moments in a teenage boys life but fekcit, i know that theres a steamy session between Hamlet and Ophelia too...

    :)
