If you're talking about HID bulbs that you retro-fit to existing headlamps then I think you're on shaky ground since AFAIK they're illegal in the EU due to the lack of things such a self-levelling system to minimise dazzling. However if you replace the whole headlamp with a proper EU type-approved HID unit then you'd be ok.

ECE regulation R48 is an international regulation to which Ireland is signed up.

CE me hole. The Chinese have adopted a similar mark and claim it is means China Export.

Whether your car will pass or not is hit an miss. Original lights were not designed to have non-standard bulbs and the result vary as a result. Some projector headlamps produce good results, whereas H4 type (dual filament) replacements should carry a prison sentence.

They don't check the type of bulbs you have just the alignment. If the lights are aligned correctly, then you'll pass. Have them in my wife's A2 and it passed no problem.

However, HIDs don't suit some reflectors. I've seen some conversions that are bright, but ok and I've seen others that should be outlawed. The owners must be pi$$ed off with people constantly flashing them. Japanese cars seem to be the worst offenders.

If you really want to go the HID route, bring the car to a garage afterwards and have the headlights aligned correctly. If they can be correctly aligned, then you should pass no problem.

However, it is possible that the NCT rules will change in the future and HIDs in non HID headlamps will be a straight fail.

What model bulb did the HIDs replace? Is it a projector style headlamp?

It's a H7 bulb, non projector. I know several other owners online who converted with good results and have no problems with the MOT in the UK.

Got my 6000k hid kit from Apex Performance in the UK, and no problem when I went through NCT.

Just make sure the alignment is right
