Waiting on new Family Guy, Peep show and American Office episodes and I'd like something new.

I have a fairly short attention span and it takes a VERY good show to keep be watching beyond the 1st series. One of the exceptions being the Sopranos.

Others that didn't make it for me:
Prison Break. Once they escaped the prison i lost interest, they really dragged it out that concept.
    Dexter. Meh
Lost. Draaaaaaaagged. Is it actually over yet?
Battlestar Gallactica. i wanted to like this but it really was hammy.

    So what's good?

oh, discovered Flight of the Conchords recently. Excellent show, pity they only made 2 series.

The wire is different characters every series right? That might solve the attention span issue.

Some new characters each season, most return year-on-year as well though.

Check out Breaking Bad, first Season was only 7 episodes, second season was possibly even better though.

breaking bad and entourage are excellent, if you have that short an attention span maybe just entourage as alot of it is fairly 'stand-lone' in nature. madmen is supposed to be pretty slick also but i cant vouch.

Mad Men is brilliant, but it takes a few episodes to get into it. That might not go with a short little span of attention.

How about Arrested Development? That's funny from the first episode, and it's only half an hour per shot. It's got a terrific cast, and the plotting is up there with Curb Your Enthusiasm for justified insanity: it follows a perfectly clear logic, but keeps ending up in disaster. It only got three series, but I really think it's a classic.

Bad American Accent Hugh Laurie: "Oh it's some rare disease."
Actual Americans: "No it's not. It's something else."
Bad American Accent Hugh Laurie: "You're wrong and I'll prove it by being misanthropic."
    Actual Americans: "Egad. You're right."
Bad American Accent Hugh Laurie: "I told you."

    repeat ad nauseum.

Watch It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia or The Thick Of It if you want some decent entertainment.

Entourage. Funny, short episodes and pretty simplistic storylines

The Shield has a very fast pace. You could impulsively watch a season in 2 days. Great show.

Oh, if you like american comedies watch 30 Rock and Arrested Development.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,102 ✭✭✭afatbollix

+1 for 30 rock.. I watched the 3 seris last week in 4 days.. It was that good..

I like Mad Men but I'm not sure why as nothing really happens in it, but nothing happens in a very stylish way.

Agree with all the Arrested Development suggestions, hilarious show. Like nothing else on telly except maybe a cross between Family Guy and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Mad men makes me want to have a cigarette. Going to stick it out a bit longer but as an ex smoker the cravings are killing me.

I can't believe that you called Battlestar Gallactica 'hammy'!!.. for shame!.. excellent series.

I would tell you to run out and get yourself a copy of 'Spaced' - excellent Channel 4 series.. very funny! and for a bit of sci fi I would recommend the X Files, pure brilliance..

    +1 to entourage

Also Testees is very good, but only one series I think... Very funny

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,013 ✭✭✭✭jaykhunter

I would also recommend Arrested Development. I think it's the funniest, wittiest show I've ever watched. And it's American, which is quite a feat :pac: It's full of under-appreciated actors, who thankfully since then have been able to get a good bit of work. This show is amazing. It's extensive use of wordplay is so smart, cutting and overall funny. Definite re-watch value. The characters are unlike other TV characters I've seen, which I guess is why it got cancelled after 3 seasons (that, and the worst marketing in history). Please give it a try!

Also, "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" is an excellent comedy, about 3 25-ish year olds, who are irish american, badly running an irish bar in Philly. Dennis's sister is the barmaid there. The comedy is conversational, quick-fire and the friends turn on each other very quickly, and usually descend into rows over the most trivial things. It's just amazing. Watch one episode, you'll be hooked.

At the start of Season 2, they introduce Frank, Dennis and Dee's father, played by Danny DiVito. Highly, highly recommend.

    Would second The West Wing.

Chuck is worth getting on DVD, funny and a huge attention span is not required.

Would second HOUSE it's certainly entertaining.
24, but it depends on taste

''Nurse Jackie'' (currently on RTE 2 on Tuesday nights at 21:55).

Starring Edie Falco (Carmela from ''The Sopranos'') as the eponymous Nurse.

Excellent dark comedy. Parts laugh-out-loud, parts tragic, parts touching... Some very neat little continuation threads running through series.

I'm like the OP, it takes something pretty special to hold my attention span (shows that have succeeded in this regard: ''The Sopranos'', the aforementioned ''...Jackie'', ''Frasier'', ''King Of The Hill'', ''South Park'' and ''Family Guy'').

I'd highly recommend ''Nurse Jackie'' to anyone. Excellent stuff!!!

Loving "The Mentalist" so far. Seasons 3-7 of Monk are also well worth a watch. Both (well, from what I have seen of the mentalist) follow the "Who-Dunnit with obligatory red herring", but never seem to grow old.
