Hi, I am due to start back in college next week and I am hoping to find a part time job as soon as possible. I was playing a small home game last night when one of my friends brought up the idea of becoming a poker dealer. I have never dealt in a casino before so have no real experience but I am able to shuffle and deal quite well from watching dealers so I guess it would not be too difficult to learn the ropes. I personally doubt that there is too much (if any) demand for dealers right now with the current state of things in this country but I thought it would be worth asking anyway.
    Thanks

There's still a good amount of demand for dealers.

Learning the ropes in relation to the mechanics of the game seems easy, but it's a bit more difficult than you think. Even the best make stupid mistakes. Dealing with these mistakes and player mistakes is the next level and this is where nerves can bite you in the behind. Then there's customer service, i.e. dealing with people which a big step up especially given the fact that there's a lot of losing going on and you are, rightly or wrongly, too often perceived as the bringer of misfortune. Getting these matters is important as it affects your tips and tips make a big difference income-wise.

Also don't forget it's a night job which isn't great for the sleep patterns and your existing social life, and the job can be quite boring at times.

That's a bit of realism for you but don't let that deter you.

    How to make a start:
Go to a self-dealt game like the Sunday afternoon one in the Fitz or a freeroll in somewhere like Voodoo Club and talk to whoever is in charge and ask to deal. Best not to play while you're at this. See how you get on and take it from there. Check the Tournament Schedules for other freerolls and self-dealt games.

There are also dealing schools/classes offered on boards from time to time, so keep an eye out for them.

Hope that helps and good luck.
