College Newspapers?

How many and what are the college newspapers in Trinity, and does anyone read them?

I'm interested in becoming involved in one, probably proof-reading and such as I'm a fairly pedantic English Studies student.

I couldn't go to the thing put on by University News for Freshers' last Thursday, did anyone here go?

University News is The Record, rebranded. You'd definitely have your work cut out for you as a proofreader. If you're interested in journalism, stay well away from it. It's utter crap.

That stray apostrophe in your last sentence would indicate that your copy-editing skills aren't particularly good.

    Freshers'... Freshers' Week.
The week belongs to the Freshers, plural.

    This is correct, no?

    None worth mentioning.

Freshers' Week, indeed, but he was referring to JF students, not the week.

    Trinity News.

He plainly wasn't. The capital F makes it clear that he was referring to the occasion, rather than the participants. A gaggle of freshers; Freshers' Week. At the very least there is an ambiguity, and you have no grounds for assuming that he does not mean precisely what he seems to say.

Your pedantic urge is admirable, RC, but you owe the man a beer and a graceful retraction.

They could both do with someone literate offering their proofreading expertise.

The papers are not very good...

There's more than ambiguity. Surely freshers' week (which doesn't really require capitals, but I wouldn't get worked up about them) is this week? "The thing put on by University News [what's that?] for Freshers' last Thursday" doesn't make sense if I'm right.

"Epic Tissue", since you're so free with your criticism, why don't you let everyone know your problems with Trinity News?

Go on, it will increase your post count and impress your virtual friends.

Hah... I did mean Freshers' Week, but it was ambiguous. Not only that, it wasn't actually during Freshers' Week (obviously, since it hasn't started yet). Reading my post again, it does look wrong. In any case, I'll have that pint! :P

@Pet: You don't think that the experience would be worth popping on the ole CV? I'm not terribly interested in journalism. Investigative journalism would be exciting and worthwhile... I think I'd be bored by the rest.

I might get involved despite the alleged crapness... Correcting irk-ing grammar mistakes is therapeutic. :)

Oh... The handbags came out while I was posting...

Let's all be friends? This sort of thing seems to be happening in the TCD forum a lot lately...

Ooh, good point. I didn't spot the grotesque chronological inexactitude.

I guess I owe you a pint now. Whatever happens, this is going to end in 40 proof tears.

I'm sorry my inaccuracy led to such upset.

I'm sorry my inaccuracy led to such upset.

I feel pretty suicidal at being out-pedanted by the noble Rorate, but I'll learn to live with it. Other than that, I don't think anyone is even vaguely upset. It's a good thread.

To keep it serious for a moment, what are the publications worth reading in Trinity? I seem to remember there is a pretty good literary magazine (The Attic?), but after that I'm a bit lost.

    Hear, hear.

I've also heard of the Attic (I think my cousin writes for it), but would also lke some infoooo....

    Bit of an over-reaction...

So in what way are you involved with Trinity News?

Well I was the photographer for The Record two years ago, this year I'm taking photos for Trinity News (just to see how the other half lives).

The people I've met are all very nice and the newspapers do give student-relevant info. I'd recommend you read the TN online and see if it's of a quality you'd like to write/proof-read for.

If our papers aren't great then the other uni's must be horrible. I recall TN winning quite a few Smedia awards 2 years ago and The Record winning some too. (Unfortunately my photos only made it into the final four ;) )

Ok, "Rorate Caeli", I'll do it in my next post. You know, postcount++ and all that...

All he did was say the papers were not very good. No need for the comment about postcount++ and virtual friends.

The press should be especially open to criticism since they generally do a fair bit themselves!
