Have been doing a lot of searching about protecting data on CD's and have come across Truecrypt which seems to be recommened by everyone in various other boards - however from my reading of it a person who does not have Truecrypt installed cannot actually open an encrypted data CD, is this the case?

I am a novice to a lot of computer areas and have been doing a lot of reading about it all so if I have missed a very obvious FAQ on the truecrypt site that states otherwise apologies - my head is a little fried at the moment - I didn't think protecting data would be such a frustrating endevour.

Yes the person reading the encrypted file also needs Truecrypt installed and also the password.

However, you can make it easy for them by including the Truecrypt installation file on the cd (but obviously not encrypted) along side the encrypted data.

You can also create a portable version of Truecrypt that can be run directly off the CD without needing to install it, details here:
    http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/?s=truecrypt-portable

And yes, I'd highly recommend Truecrypt.
