Part time job while at NCAD

I'm sorry if this is the wrong thread for this but I don't know where to put it. My son is starting in NCAD this week, he has a part time weekend job that sometimes requires him to be in at 6pm on Fridays in Dundalk. Does anyone know what time NCAD finishes up on Fridays. Someone told him 5.30pm but that seems very late to me. I'm having a panic attack here. He really can't afford to lose the job:(.

Does he have his time table yet? It's not as if they 'finish up' 5.30 like school or something, your son could be finished up much earlier or indeed have no college on friday (that was the case with me and that was arts in ucd). When your son registers, he'll get a list of subjects or 'modules', and the hours he has lectures and tutorial etc... just have a look at these. Don't panic yet, if there is a clash, is there some way his employer could reorganise his hours? He could work later or earlier on some other day of the week? Find out his time table and don't panic, this is crucial.

Thanks El Siglo, at the moment he's only getting one night's work, usually either Fri or Sat. It varies from week to week. He asked his boss last night about just being in for Sats but she implied that he'd be let go if he wasn't flexible. She's not the most lenient of people I don't think. He's registering this Tues so he'll hopefully know more then. He's actually in for work Mon evening unusually so he'll have to tell the boss not to make any decisions until he knows more about his hours.

The main thing is not to panic. Once he knows his timetable he'll be in a better position to make a decision. Even if the employer is anal about this, it can't be helped, college is college and that's the priority (always, work must never take priority over college, it just isn't worth it). Keep an eye out on part-time work in the college, there might be some jobs going in SU shops etc... I wouldn't worry about this yet though, yourself and your son will have a better picture of the situation on tuesday and chances are it'll be alright. Let us know how he gets on anyway.

I think the time tables have changed for core year, before Friday in core was the HADCOM studies and quite important, but I think they've changed it so that the lectures finish at one or two - It shouldn't be a problem either ways, the latest it usually finished was half 4, or we could hang on later if we wanted.

Bear in mind, it's not school, where you get a letter home if you walk out of class, he's free to leave whenever he wants - He can always get a friends notes, and a lot of lecturers are providing notes online.

If it is studio work, it's that bit easier, it's just a case of getting your work done. I think the latest we ever had to stay on in Core was 4?

I'm finished up now, but it should be similar enough.

You're right El Siglo, college is more important but it'd be crap to have to give up the job. The money is good for the hours he does and he makes tips sometimes. It shouldn't be a problem for them to just have him in Saturdays, there are quite a few flexible workers on their books.

Thanks a million Fajitas, that sounds really positive. If he finishes at 4 he'd have to rush to make the 4.30 bus from Parnell sq but he should make it.
I'll definitely let you all know how he gets on.:).

I'm sure he could stay in late on a Thursday night and do a bit more 'work' to make up for the Friday evening.

Tip; Your son won't be home on a Thursday night, don't worry and don't ask questions :P

My son registered today, he thinks it'll be about 4.30 finish. He rang his superviser and she said it's ok for him to be in for 7pm. Should be able to make it in time. Grand:). He'll have to have his wits about him to have all his stuff ready in time to make the bus, he's such a scatterbrain...bless:o.
