The only info you need to know, is what's in the Wiki article.

So how much does the Directorate differ from the standard -2 shops at Battalion and Brigade level? Are the soldiers eligible to serve in any such section, or is G-2 really just a name that they picked because they couldn't think of anything else, and it's really an entirely different organisation?
Who serves in the Battalion and Brigade -2 shops?

    NTM

NCO's and Officers that have gone on the relevant courses end up serving in the Battalion and Brigade Int/Ops.

As for your question about G2, I don't really have an answer for that. Obviously, G2 differs highly from your regular Brigade and Battalion shops. As a Private, the highest I've ever dealt with has been Brigade... In fact, I can't imagine too many people on the lower steps of seniority have dealt with G2 at all.

Is there an MI Corps in Ireland? I can't recall.

    No, there's no Intelligence Corps.

Wow, really, I find that hard to believe. (Not doubting your info poccington) With Irelands history with Great Britain and the north and so on, I thought that there would have to be some department of MI to at least interpret intel and advise accordingly.

There's Intelligence Units working within the DF, there's a Directorate of Military Intelligence... But there's just no Intelligence Corps, the way there is an Infantry Corps. If you read some of the above links, you'll see how G2 operates. Then all Brigades and Battalions operate with their own organic Intel/Ops shops.

So in theory an Intelligence Corps exists but the DF prefers to do things backwards.

    Well if it works....

    Edit for clarity.

Well if it works....don't fix it. Squaddie logic.

It's not that daft. S-2 positions at Battalion and Brigade in the US military usually go to the combat arms. I'm hoping that my next posting will be as the Squadron -2.

The majority of the soldiers who work in the -2 shop are M.I. branch, but M.I. officers will usually find themselves commanding M.I. units, not M.I. sections in combat units.

A couple of years ago, I was in a closed and civilianised barracks in Dublin, in the Officers mess. Inside there was clear evidence that the ARW or someone had used it for some form of house clearing or hostage rescue exercise. The walls were spattered with red and blue paint marks and with spent 'simunition' casings and handles from either smoke or stun grenades scattered about. From the amount of hits it was clear a major 'firefight' had taken place at the stairs and each room showed evidence of clearing.

But most interesting of all was a scrap of paper labelled 'exercise' with a bio of a suspected 'terrorist', clearly intended to aid surveillance.

I drew my own conclusions from that. It's not much of a leap to assume the the ARW and G2 may well be connected. It would be logical enough to assume the ARW would be a source of recruitment for G2.

    Ever hear of PERSEC/OPSEC?

    Ever hear of PERSEC/OPSEC?

ever considered that stuff in the public domain - for good or ill - is already in the hands of those its of most interest to?

do you for one second doubt that every intelligence agency with a passing interest in Ireland knows this stuff already, or that the various IRA's don't?

if everyone else knows it, its not a secret. shouting 'OPSEC' at something doesn't either make it a secret again nor make it worth being one.

one of many things i have discovered about the Irish Military is that there is a tendency to cover a subject in 'OPSEC' in order not to hide its secrets, but to hide the fact that it neither has nor deserves any...

Posting it on a public board to those that don't know, make it alright?

I seem to remember a certain neighbor of ours underestimating our Int ability during the war of Independence..;)

Was this in the Phoenix Park by any chance?
