Snow Leopard and Time Machine

I installed Snow Leopard yesterday as a clean install and went about restoring all my old files from my Time Machine backups.

First problem, it would not left me backup all my user account directly as it can't make 2 accounts with the same name. So now I have 3 user accounts, my wife's and 2 for me!

Second problem, when I did the first Time Machine backup it deleted 6 months of old backups. Why the hell did it do this? I was able to see files all the way back to Feb 09, but can only go back to Aug 09 now. Have i done something wrong here? I had 186Gb free on the external drive before the first backup, so free space was not a problem.

How did you restore the data? Did you use Migration Assistant?
