New US Shows

Not sure if a thread has been done for this yet but this month most of the new US tv shows start up. We've lost a few such as 'Prison Break', 'Life' and 'Terminator: SCC' so I'll be interested to see what the new season offers. I've heard a bit of hype around 'Flash Forward' and 'V' - I'll deffo be giving the pilots a shot, but does anybody know of any other potentially good shows starting up?

We've had a few threads on the subject over the summer, but mostly have just been talking about shows as they pop up. Anyway, gives me an opportunity to give my two cents about the upcoming US season.

Saw the pilot for Modern Family, a new comedy on ABC, which was hysterical - it officially premieres this wednesday, so we'll have it available to us by Thursday morning. I'm already pinning this show as possibly my favourite newbie of the season.

Community began on NBC last Thursday. It was a bit meh, but decent enough that I'll give it an episode or two before making up my mind.

Bored to Death kicks off on HBO on on Sunday (today) and I've heard mixed reviews so far, but Zack Galifiankis is in it, so worth a look at, at the very least.

The Forgotten starts this Tuesday on ABC (I think) and it's a sort of detectivey mystery series along the lines of House or Bones. It could go either way, but hopefully it'll be good.

Cougar Town kicks off on Wednesday night on ABC alongside the aforementioned Modern Family. It's the new Bill Lawrence [that's the guy responsible for Scrubs] series and it stars Courtney Cox... should be decent enough.

Flash Forward begins on ABC this Thursday. I've seen the pilot and really enjoyed it, could be a very good show, and has a great cast, including Sonya Wagner and John Cho. I hear Dominic Monoghan will be joining the cast soon as well.

Hank and The Middle join Modern Family and Cougar Town on the 30th as part of ABC's comedy line-up, both look like they'll be pretty good with the former starring Kelsey Grammer and the latter co-starring Neil Flynn.

Stargate Universe kicks off in October and V kicks off in November, with Day One, The Deep End, Happy Town and Sons of Tucson all saved up for the new year. Hopefully they'll all be worth the wait.

Glee started a couple of week ago as well. It's good, but think it may have been hyped up a bit too much. I'm hoping the standard will improve because it's a good premise.

Then of course the returns of the veterans... Survivor, Bones and Supernatural are all back already. I only got into the latter two towards the end of the summer, so still playing catch-up, but hopefully I'll be up to date with everyone else soon.

Monk has also been back for quite awhile, but the sad news is, this is the last season of Monk. He'll be leaving our hearts, just before Christmas. May it be repeated often in years to come.

This Monday sees the return of House, How I Met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory and Heroes, so Tuesday should be a great morning of tv. Heroes needs to come back with a bang as it sucked last year, but all the other shows mentioned are great if you haven't already seen 'em.

Gary Unmarried returns this Wednesday. One of the most underrated shows of last year - it really deserves to be watched.

Dollhouse (can I get a WHOOP! WHOOP!) will grace us with its presence on Friday with its much anticipated second season and not only people dying to see what happens next, but the ratings will be watched very closely and hopefully have risen considerably since last season.

Next Sunday sees the welcome return of everyones favourite serial killer, Dexter, while another group of hopefuls begin their quest to travel the globe in The Amazing Race.

However fans of Lost, 24, Chuck and Party Down will have to wait until the new year for the return of the shows, as well as a completely re-vamped version of Scrubs which people will most likely complain a lot about regardless of whether the show is good or not.

And of course, for anyone who has not yet realised it's gonna be a long 9 months until we see fan favourite True Blood return to the screens. It's gonna be like we're pregnant.

Nice round-up CaptainNegative - the only correction is for "Community" which already aired its' pilot on Thursday the 17th, along with the return of the US Office and Parks And Recreation.

I'll cover some more of the returnees....

Criminal Minds (one of my favourite procedurals) is back on Wednesday. Can't wait to see how they get out of that cliffhanger.

Castle is back on Tuesday for a second season, The Mentalist is back on Thursday. I'm a numb3rs fan, and that's back on Friday.

Californication is back on the 27th, and Lie to Me on the 28th.

30 Rock, one of the consistently funny shows on US TV is back on October 15th.

The Warehouse 13 finale is on Wednesday. If you're looking for a fun sci-fi show that really improved as the season progressed, you could do far worse.

Since no one covers the more teeny bopper shows/channels....my round-up:

Currently ABC Family are broadcasting season 3 of Greek, Mondays episode just gone was really really funny!....episode 4 will drop tomorrow. Same channel are also broadcasting season 4 of Lincoln Heights, season premiere last Monday....i don't watch this show myself though.

Make It Or Break It returns for a further 10 episodes in January 2010 along with a further 12 episodes of The Secret Life Of The American Teenager, now in it's second season. (ABC Family shows)

The CW have 3 brand new shows, Melrose Place; The Beautiful Life and The Vampire Diaries....all three are being aired as we speak.

Season 3 of Gossip Girl is now airing along with season 2 of 90210. But tomorrow night will be a big one with several channels starting the season in earnest.

In addition all three CSI shows return during this week, CSI Miami tomorrow night, season 10 of CSI Vegas on Thursday night

Great stuff guys, some interesting shows there.

CaptainNegative - I agree with you about Heroes. Really got into it during season one but it's gone downhill since. Needs to improve this year or I won't be watching it anymore. I had intended to watch the first season of Dollhouse over the summer but watched Battlestar Gallactica, Alias and Dexter (seasons 1-3) instead - all great shows by the way. I felt season 3 of Dexter was a little weaker than the first two but hoping the new season will be good. There's normally a mid-season hiatus over xmas so might watch Dollhouse and True Blood then. I'm eagerly awaiting the final season of Lost and looking forward to another 24 hours of Jack Bauer madness! I'll be sure to give the pilots you've mentioned a watch and then I should have a good idea of which ones to follow/ditch.

Mr E - I haven't got around to seeing any of those shows yet but 30 Rock is one I've been meaning to catch up on for quite some time now!

Richard Dower - another CW show returning is Smallville. I had lost interest a couple of years ago because they went WAY off the Superman story and were just making it up as they went along. Then last year was announced as the final season and I thought I'd watch it to see how it ends. Then they went and announced another season... I was raging! Although, there are some fantastic looking women in it and I'm sure the female viewers get their fair share of eye candy too.

Thanks for all that info everyone - I've had to do up a spreadsheet to keep track of what I'll be watching on each day :D

No need for that John. Just set up a free account on http://www.myepisodes.com and load it up with all the shows you want to watch. Its a lifesaver for a TV nut like me. Covers UK, Canadian and Aussie TV shows too.

Bored to death was funny enough, worth a watch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

I've had a word document for the last year telling me when the next episodes of certain shows are on and also telling me what the last episode I watched was. It's the best way to keep track of things. I've used some of those online schedule things before and they're handy enough, but I find the personal schedule is the way to go.

Yo dudes....completely off point but I've nowhere else to turn. Is there anywhere on boards that I can find a discussion on buying/selling tvs? Answer me that and I will pack my bags and be gone from here A.S.A.P :o

Check out TV Forecast - you can use the website or download an iPhone app:

    http://www.bigbucketblog.com/tv/

You then add all the shows you want to keep track of and it shows you when the next episode of each one is on - handy with US shows, which seem to take random breaks quite often during the season...

Think it's worth adding too that Curb Your Enthusiasm returned in the US last night.

Next week will see the return of Family Guy on September 27th.

Next month South Park will return on October 7th.

I find it sad that Weeds isn't shown anywhere over here. Is it because it's, well...about weeds...? Why why why?????

Looking forward to TBBT, Season 3 starts today in the US,

Nurse Jackie seems nice when I caught it last week.

It depends how many shows you watch. I'm following about 20 different things at the moment, which can get confusing.

I follow a fair few, i might drop a few or add some each season. I am actually thinking about adding House to my list!....i've been watching a few eps. on Sky on of Season 5....i was quite impressed.

I may start to follow this show now, gonna give season 6 a shot.

Only 20?! I think by the time the full season kicks in I'll be up to around 45 different things... of course, by October, US networks will start having random breaks all over the schedule for different reasons, so there won't be that many to watch all at once. With a lot of those shows though, I end up saving up episodes for Christmas, summer and other lulls in TV land...

Actually, counted up. I've 34 between now and xmas, with 18 additional shows after xmas. I've included new series' in that number, so some may got dropped and obviously more can be picked up. That's a lot of tv. Never realised before...

Anybody heard or watched the pilot for Archer?

Going to watch it tonight. Supposedly it's been getting pretty favourable reviews

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,518 ✭✭✭matrim

I use http://www.pogdesign.co.uk/cat/ to keep track of when stuff is on. You can filter by what shows you want but generally I don't bother and just scan for what was on since I last got shows

Out of the new shows I've only watched Vampire diaries so far and wasn't impressed, but know that my GF is going to make me watch it as she loves the books.

I plan to give Community, Bored to death and Stargate Universe a try first off, and after that will check out what the reaction is like to other shows before deciding if I want to give them a go

Have it sitting in a queue of stuff to watch :). The premiere was purposefully aired with no promotion, right after "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" - FX was originally going to air it alongside "Always Sunny" but plans changed and they only aired the pilot as a teaser now. Not sure yet when they plan on airing the series regularly.

I wonder how many of these new shows will make it past Christmas without being canceled.

I've checked out Community and quite enjoyed it.

Have Archer waiting to be watched, i've heard mixed reviews but i'll watch with an open mind.

TBBT and The US Office have started very well.

Then you have to go through all your shows and select all the seasons/episodes you seen - then click "time ive wasted" it adds up the total amount of tv hours you've watched - then you have to remember that you have seen some shows many times :)

For me there is a few mentions. Warehouse 13 got better as the season went on. A nice cliff hanger and hopefully a second season on the way.

Still waiting on the second half of the seasons of burn notice and leverage.

NCIS returned on Wednesday night followed by the premiere of NCIS: Los Angeles. Chris O'Donnell and LL Cool J, the jury is still out on that one. We will see but it is worth checking out.

Finally, new season of Greys Anatomy. As expected,
George O'Malley died and Izzie Stevens lived
but it had a bit of a twist.

New Family Guy and The Cleveland Show coming soon, but I can see The Cleveland show going the same way as Joey did after Friends.

By the way, it might be noteworthy for people to put in where they are getting their shows from. Torrents or whatever. Me, I buy the stuff from itunes US and play on Apple TV.

Any discussion on where to source episodes is technically against the charter. Even having a US iTunes account is essentially a workaround, that's not technically permitted by Apple's EULA...

There's definitely a second season on the way - the show's a big ratings winner for SyFi scoring some of their biggest numbers in years.

I'm enjoying the dramedy Mercy, it's got the right balance of humour and drama. I really like the choice of Michelle Tractenberg as Chloe....lol, her character will surely change the most as the show progresses,

Watched about half the pilot episode the other night and nearly died of boredom. It's another hospital drama focusing on the love lives of the staff... YAWN!!!

Aye, but the main character is an Iraq war vet and nurse, gives it something a bit different....she's suffering from PTSD. Bit skinny though.

If that storyline alone was the only thing going on in the show, it might be just about watchable, but the other stuff ruined it for me, I'm afraid...

Saw the 1st episode of Flash Forward and quite liked it, good potential.
Also saw 20mins of the 1st episode of Warehouse 13. Thought that so far it is very Eureka-ish but with the 2 lead characters of the Bones type, which is putting me off.
If yer looking for an non sci-fi show i'd recommend Generation Kill. Well so far anyway, again only 1 ep into that too.

Hardly counts as 'new' though, does it ? First screened in Summer 2007. And it's a mini-series, not equivalent to the other shows mentioned.

Mercy seems to be linked to TRAUMA. Saw both the other night. Not sure about Mercy, but trauma looks good. Its got the guy that played the FBI Bowmen in Die Hard 4 in it. Looks promising.

So far, Im disappointed with NCIS: Los Angeles and The Clevland Show.
