Say I lent a DVD to a friend and he never gave it back to me, do I have any rights? Would he be entitled to ownership of that DVD after a set period? Is there anyway to get it back legally even if it was only like 20 euro new? Are there other terms and conditions of private lending of items? I assume you enter into a type of contract with libraries that covers all this?

He has breached a contract of bailment.

You are entitled to sue for the value of the item or if you can show it has unique characteristics you can get a court order that it be delivered up to you.

The statute of limitations for this type of action is 6 years.
