Dead iPod Touch, 16GB a few years old

    Hi,

Apologies in advance, I suspect this is a well worn topic.

The kids have taken to watching Disney YouTube clips on my iPhone 3GS. Which is fine, unless I need it.

Anyway, I have an old 16GB iPod Touch which 'died' a few years ago. I didn't try very hard to fix it. Perhaps the fixes have improved.

When I plug the iPod into the MacBook, iTunes doesn't start, but if I start iTunes it 'recognises' a iPod in Recovery Mode. iTunes extracts the software and goes to 'Preparing iPod for restore...' And then just sits there. The iPod itself has the iTunes logo on top and the a picture of the USB 'plug' below.

    Any ideas. Thanks in advance.

    DFD.

Does iTunes give you an error message when it's trying to restore?
How long do you leave it to do it's thing?
Try holding the power and home buttons for about 15 seconds then release the home, but keep holding down the power button. Your iPod should just restart.

Tried that, I know get as far as 'Verifying iPod Software', getting error message 9.

    Left it overnight, no difference.

    Any help appreciated.

Have you tried updating it with jailbroken firmware?

Just tried QuickPwn but it didn't recognise the iPod, though iTunes continues to recognise it as an iPod, though with no details.

If anyone as suggestions for an alternate jailbreak piece of software for a Mac running 10.5.8 that would be much appreciated.

It's a tricky one. Do you have the latest version of iTunes installed?
A cursory glance around the web for error 9's suggest restarting, swapping USB ports, holding down the home button as you plug the iPod into your computer, trying a different USB cable. I get the impression it's just blind luck, and the mentality you need to adopt is 'if at first you don't succeed..'
Jailbreaking software won't help you, any form of jailbreak will require you to connect your iPod back into iTunes to dump the new firmware onto it, and if you can't snap it out of DFU mode there's nothing you can do. Try it on another computer, is what I would suggest.

Try a different cable, too. This screwed me around for ages.
