OSX - Spaces

I realise this is such a n00b question but in the few years ive been using macs, Ive never quite worked out how to use Spaces. Ive only recently utilised Expose so i admit I am behind the times. I searched youtube but couldnt find anything specific to Spaces. Can anyone give me some insight please?
