Not sure if this is in the right place... last May i was stopped for not having road tax on display... when i went to pay i didnt have enough money cos it went up to €90..... since then i forgot all about it until today...
my question is how fu**ked am i?
can i still pay in post office or is a summons on its way, and if so, how bad will it be?

Depends if Gardaí actually reported you or just threatened to. Did you get a physical ticket or letter telling you about the fine?

If you haven't paid the fixed penalty within 56 days a summons is automatically generated giving you a court date, its up to the judge then so...

There is no penalty points for having no tax.

The fine can be somewhere from 50 euro to a few hundred. The judge can take into consideration how much it is to tax your car for the year against how long your tax was out for and any previous convictions too.

Tax the motor, pay the back tax.
Bring along the tax disc to court and show it to any senior counsel who wishes to see it (Plus the Garda involved) and maybe...just maybe the presiding Judge will be minded NOT to reach for the black silk square ! ;)

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.

What thenog said is correct. But be aware, in Traffic we always add a no tax summons.
You got a ticket for non display. And from that you will recieve a summons for non display which will have a fine of about €100 - €150 or so. However if they add a no tax summons the fine can be as much as €800. Depends on the member.

The member will request a CT53 tax certificate from the tax office and that will certify if tax was out and if it was paid since/declared off the road. So if you havint taxed it since....make sure you back tax it to cover the date you were stopped or it will be a false decleration and another summons.
