Hostelworld.com went down a little in my estimation after they edited my review of the absolutely atrocious BaxPax Kreusberg Berlin Hostel. Reviews here. Mine is the 30% one.

They edited out the start where I said "Terrible hostel, reasons:" and where I made a comment that the staff are the least friendliest I have ever come across. I tie this editing in with the fact the the owner left a comment. Said comment including the stupid "you were informed at reception" which a) no I wasnt, unless you include me reading a sheet on the table of my own accord and b) its just a bit late to be informing us of these crap rules when weve just checked in in a huge new city at half ten at night.

I dont know who to blame, to be honest. I do know however that once Ive worked up enough travel points to get the $20 Amazon.com voucher ill be shifting my business to Hostelbookers.com. I thought Hostelworld.com was there to help travelers, not hostel owners.

I don't use them anymore now. They gave me a lifetime gold card which entitles people to no booking fee for life and seem to have taken it away now. I have to contact and find out why but it seems to be bad form.
Also, I always use the site to see which hostels are good and then google them for their phone number. This means the hostel owner gets all the money from the traveler as Hostelworld keep the 10% deposit.

Even the reviews are dodgy. The problem is is that travelers are an overly optimistic group of individuals and once they have fun somewhere they give it 100% in all categories.

For example, we stayed in Villa St Exubery in Nice. The security was pretty bad - the doors didn't automatically close and anyone who looked remotely hostel like could stroll away into the hostel and your room. However on the HostelWorld page their security is like 90% or something. Same for their location even though the location was pretty poor.

Saying that we did get set up with some really great places. Hosteller, a new hostel in Bled Slovenia, comes to mind.
