Certainly Angela's in Sligo is part of the NUI, and a third language is therefore a requirement for matriculation.

I'm not sure if anywhere else in (the Republic of) Ireland trains Home Ec. teachers any more? Certainly Sion Hill closed a couple of years ago.

I'm not sure what the position would be if you were to look to colleges in the UK or NI.

you are in fifth year now so you could defo pick up a language and do it in the two years.I do french and find it hard enough and iv done it since 4th class. But its because there are sooo many verbs and tenses etc. I have heard that spanish is much easier and even at that you could do it at ordinary level

I'm pretty sure that all the universities in Ireland require you to have a third language. I know that most ITs don't. I'd say try to switch to French to keep your options open, especially seeing as you're not 100% sure of what you want to do in the future.

You don't need a third language for two of the biggest universities in Ireland, namely UL and DCU. Between them they have a multitude of courses to choose from. I'm in UL myself and I know they do a few teaching courses but I'm not sure if they do Home ec teaching. The NUIs no longer have a language requirement if you are doing certain courses so check that out too. I'm not sure if TCD has a language requirement either.

You are clearly not a language person, do not choose a language simply to keep your options open, you will regret it. Do the subjects you like best and don't look back. There is more than one way to do anything. You are still in 5th year, come CAO time, you may have changed your mind re careers altogether!

TCD has no 3rd language requirement.

There are actually a fair few courses that don't require a third language no matter what collage it's in; like science and art for example.

But it might be an idea take up French just to keep all your options open, in case you decide to do an arts degree or something along those lines.

I think the best thing to do is to check out http://www.qualifax.ie and search for different courses that you're considering, and have a look at the entry requirements. It'll give you a better preceptive on how much you might need French.

i'm in the same boat - picked DCG for leaving cert but already i'm finding it way too hard and not what i had in mind. The other classes on at same time are business, french, home.ec BUT the home.ec teacher has already told me she wont let me join her class and that's the one i would have preferred. So its really a choice between french and business , french i despised all through jc , and business i found boring BUT these would be useful in college applications etc. in case i wanted to do a business course or do a course which required 3rd language. Any help?

i didnt have a 3rd language at all in secondary school, biiig mistake.
there are so many courses i would have loved to have done but i couldnt. luckily i was happy enough to do nursing which i dont need a language for in NUIG, but i would have loved to have more options open to me. stick with your language at pass level! you wont regret it
