What happened to Gomez?

Not a fan but 10 years ago they won the Mercury award and were destined for great things. Then with every new album release they faded further away. Ahead of their time they should have been huge - anyone know what happened?

Gomez found guilty of robbing children at gunpoint

No idea. That's what google turned up though. :D

Well, at least I tried, right?

They've got a gig in The Academy on the 28th of November.

They supported Pearl Jam in London a few weeks ago so things can't be too bad for them (or very bad, if you wanna look at it like that).

what happened to miss dynamite, roni size etc. the mercury means nothing in the grand scheme of things. Gomez have released a few albums since and are doing their own non-chart bothering thing!

Forget the whole "why arent they huge now" thing. Theyve had some quality albums out since the mercury and are still a superb band. One of the best lead vocalists around.

they have been tipping away since the mercury prize, made some excellent albums and a few mediocre ones, they live and are quite successful in america these days

Great award winning 1st album followed up by an okayish 2nd album with versions of their better songs further followed up 3rd album containing little more then a lazy recycling of previous songs.
I think they also jumped on the indie/brit pop "strings" bandwagon which I thought at the time seemed desperate and lacking of ideas.

They had a very unique sound but by not appearing to change or allowing themselves to evolve over those initial albums it became very tired sounding and formulaic.

Last album got some very good reviews I though as did their shows, they were pretty good when I saw 'em some time in the late nineties.

was at their last gig in the academy, seemed to just be full of nostalgic old fans rather than a push for reclaiming themselves.

really like the new album they released

I hear you mate. I am a big Gomez fan, but after the third 'Abandoned shopping....' album they went a bit off the rails experimenting with odd chord changes, weird sounds etc. I liked it, but it's not everyones cup of tea. You should check out the most recent album, 'A New Tide', released earlier this year. It's easily their best. I seen them at the Academy in April and their definitely sounding better than ever live too.

They really did go a bit wacko for a while, completely stunting any growing popularity they had. They've gotten it back on track recently, apparently getting a lot of good reviews over in the US. Was at their gigs last year in the Academy, great live as always. I still find it hard to listen to Abandoned... but A New Tide and How We Operate were still very good after that. A New Tide especially so.

    They all sing on that.

    They all sing on that.

I think he means Ben Ottewell, though Ian Ball sings more on Whippin' Picadilly.

Though Ottewell is a bit raspy (just a bit?), I think that just adds to his voice. I had Gomez on in the car one time bringing some of our Scouts hillwalking and one of them comes out with "He's an awful singer, he'd never do any good on x-factor".

Needless to say, the car was lighter on the way home.

What happened to Gomez? You can ask them yourself - they're playing the Academy Dublin, on 25 June, then Cyprus Avenue in Cork (26th), then the Limelight in Belfast (27th).

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

I seen them the last time they played the academy a couple of years ago, and it was a great gig! A New Tide is a decent album too. for anyone on the fence about going to see them I'd say go for it .... excellent live band

do they have a new album to promote?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,088 ✭✭✭LaHaine

Only knew two songs when I went to see them a couple of years ago. Pleasantly surprised.

Still didnt get into the albums after but enjoyed the live show. Worth a look.

Cheers for the heads up on the Academy gig. I was at the last gig in the Olympia last year or the year before. Very enjoyable gig. Looking forward to this now.

Great gig last night. Good crowd too. Almost missed the second encore as I was halfway out the door but delighted I didn't. It's one of my favourite songs.

Does anyone know the name of the support act? They had some decent songs.

Leaders of Men they were called. Heard them down at the Cork gig and they sounded very decent alright.
