Being over 30 years old, it'll cost €50 to VRT and ca€50pa road tax. Congrats!

Cheers Anan1, do i need to get a doe?

That I don't know, but cars over 30 years old are exempt from the NCT. I assume you can just tax it as a car?

AFAIK, all vehicles over 30 years old are exempt from NCT/DoE once taxed and insured as 'vintage'. BTW, Irish Vintage Society do 3rd party insurance for jeeps from c.€125.

    I like old landrovers too.
Is it a 'lightweight' landrover btw?

I don't think it is a lightweight, the chassis is like a defender but the wheel base is very short in length and width. I only got it by pure chance and couldn't refuse buying it when i seen it. Thanks for the tip off on the insurance. Do i need to join the vintage club?

If it's 1965 it will be a Series IIA and ex military ones are pretty rare these days, especially 88" SWB. The lightweight didn't appear until around 1969. You don't need to join a club, just go direct to the IVS or IVETA and arrange insurance through them.

    Definitely post the pictures up!

I have it home just need to get the camera sorted and I'll stick up a few pics. I need to do a few small jobs on it, the front right brake is sticking and a few oil leaks but its in great order apart from that. How do i get it onto Irish plates? its still on English ones.

You need the V5 - the English Log book. Ring your nearest revenue office, they will tell you what to do - you mightnt have to bring it for inspection

using the V5 log book that came with the vehicle, make contact with your local tax office and ask were your local VRT office is http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vrt/leaflets/vro_contacts.doc

they may ask you to bring the vehicle down.
There is a form to be filled out and the fee of 50 euro.
I would advise joining a classic car club, there are benefits plus incurance companies seem to ask for this now.
As for NCT, no you don't need to have it done on your land rover.

    Landy

I wouldn't bother with the Vintage Society Insurance. There's a hidden cost in that you have to be a member which is 30-odd quid. And they were utterly horrendous to deal with on the phone.

Try o'Riordan insurances in Cork, who I moved to after 3 frustrating years with IVS, or just ring hibernian direct

O'Riordan are the brokers for the IVS. I've had no problems with the IVS but you don't need to be a member of them or IVETA to get classic insurance, but does give you public liability cover at shows.

To get cover THROUGH them, you do need to be a member Sean.

Any changes etc on the policy were apain, and they could only accept postal orders as payment etc etc

I just thought there were better options.

I must admit they are a bit in the dark ages when it comes to payments and the like!

And a bit slow to send out certs and all that. Its the 21st century, y'know?

And yer wan's manner is brutal on the phone. I used to dread ringing.

Thats if you could get her on the phone.

I went with the Blessington classic and vintage club and took insurance with First Ireland in Leixlip

Very nice looking early series IIA but definitely not military spec. Defender door mirrors make it a bit easier place in todays modern traffic. Someone's fitted a deluxe bonnet as well.

The tyres are military though ;) They'll howl like a banshee over 40mph :D

Very tidy looking LR! Best of luck with her!

It looks a bit modern or something from the side profile for a SII? ...are the side panels and roof from a modern LR?

Nope. Ribbed roof is definately series vintage as while some early 90's & 110's came with ribbed roofs, the windscreen was a different shape, so that's definately series....they're also different length between series and defender/90/110 models The rear side panels on an 88 are a direct swap with the 110/Defender LWB station wagon, so they might be from a crewcab hardtop. More likely though is that they're just a bit odd looking as most people butcher their series hardtops to throw a set of windows in the side panels....

OP, looks like a nice machine. Any chance of a squizz under the bonnet and inside at the dash? More photos I say! ;)

Just copped the other thing about it. Series vehicles usually have the sides painted limestone, like the roof panel, not coloured the same as the vehicle. Must admit that a II looks a bit odd like that....couldn't put my finger on it at first, but that's probably what's making it look a bit weird to any other anoraks out there.
