okay, so a well known company just offered me a possible job BUT I have to sign a 1 year fixed contract. I've never had to do this before and if i decide to say quit after 6 month, is it just about giving a certain notice period or am I 'legaaly obliged' to see out the year?

No, it just means that your contract is for a year and leaves you in no doubt that when the 12 months is up, by bye matey.

    From Citizens Information

The term, fixed-term employee, covers employees whose contract ends on a specified date, or when a specific task is completed, or when a specific event occurs. Generally, a fixed-term contract ends on an agreed date. The period of such a contract may range from a matter of months up to a period of a year or more.

grand, cheers Firetrap, so If I do choose to leave the standard 2 weeks to a month or whatever they require notice is still okay?

Is there anything in the contract about giving notice?

Many employers use it to cover themselves but may be quite willing to extend the contract.

It's not really relevant. What are you going to do if someome doesn't give the proper notice?

We regularly have staff leaving without giving the proper notice but there's little we can do.

Fair enough. That's down to the employer's discretion though. Like all of these things, some do, some don't.
