trade in - first timer

Hi, first up I will say that I know next to nothing about cars! I am looking to trade up but I have never done a trade in before so I was just wondering what kind of price I can expect and does this effect my ability to negotiate on the price of the new car.

I have a 04 Renault Megane Saloon with 65K on the clock and its in good shape. Carzone is listing these between €4.7k (private sale) - 7k (dealer). is theere any chance that I will get 4.7k as a trade in value?

I intend getting a volvo s40. does the trade in remove a haggle room from the list price?

    Thanks for any advice

    Are you buying a new S40 or a pre-owned?

Most garages won't want to touch a Megane with a bargepole, so you could be looking as cheap as €2/2.5k as your trade in allowance, however that's not what's important. The real measure you should be using is cost to change. There's no point "getting" €4k for your Megane if the delaer is listing the S40 at €32k where another dealer is offering you €2k but listing the Volvo at €28.5k.

    Cost to change A is €28k, B is €26.5k.

You'll get a much better deal if you sell privately and do a cash deal.

    Thanks ninty9er. I am going for an 07 s40.
I was suspecting you might say that about the megane! My ownership of one is explained in the first line of the my first post in this thread. In fairness to this megane I have never had any trouble but at the same time I wouldn't buy another.
I was trying to avoid the hassel of a private sale not but I might have to go that way

usually private is the best way to go but sometimes it might actually be hard to sell them private. I know when I bought a new car a few year back I got a good trade in for my older car despite everyone saying I wouldn't, so shop around! ;)

Plenty of places looking for used cars around Dublin - and I'm sure they will take your Megane as I have seen many while I've been looking for car recently.

One thing I have noticed when going with a trade in is the two separate prices for cars - a price on the internet you like, the salesman then tells you this is a cash price and adds a grand to the price when you are trading in.

Have heard nothing but bad news about S40...If you do go for one make sure its VERY cheap....as far as I recall a cheap rough old S40 may dip into three figure price territory so dont pay anything mad ,much over a few thousand for a lovely one ...Just a bad buy all round and the sort of car that sells to someone who isnt 'into' cars (or reliability)...Why not an Avensis ?

    Post of the week!

An s40 is a decent enough buy. Some reports of the electrical niggle but not very widespread. Also a much better place to sit in time than an avensis

+1 I find the s40 very small inside, but different strokes and all that.
the avensis might be as reliable as a wood burning stove but its horrible to drive. If I had one I'd be hoping it broke down!
