NCT failed - querying fail repair costs

I had my NCT last week and it failed, which I expected, but I was happy it failed for so little. Anyway, I was hoping people could give me prices on the fails the car has, so as to no get overcharged when getting the car fixed in the local garage.

    Car is a 2000 BMW 5 Series, 2.0 petrol.

    Fails that I'm querying :

    Rear Suspension Radius Rod
    Rear Suspension Track Control Arm

reason for both items is WORN.

Also, the car didn't only fail for these items, other fails are minor in my eyes that i can safely repair myself.

My friend and I were talking about my NCT prior to my test, and I gave him a list of things I know whats wrong with the car, of which hardly any of them failed in he test. In the end we both realized that the NCT isnt worth the paper it''s printed on.

Too many variables to give a figure I think... replace bushes only or replace entire parts? Buy Genuine BMW, or OEM, or spurious? Hourly rate of garage?

Bushes are cheaper but can incur higher labour costs whereas replacing the entire part is quicker but the parts cost more.

Contact a few garages and get quotes for parts & labour, and find out what that price includes... new bushes or new parts. If you're wary of parts costs you can also ring a few motor factors and get prices for those. Make sure all quotes include VAT so you're comparing like with like.

On the other defects that didn't fail were they definitely test items and did they meet the fail criteria as set out in the NCT test manual?

Yep. I bought an old 3 series coupe a couple of years back and NCT'd it a week after purchase. The back wheel bearings were absolutly shot - which accounted for the loud noise when turning into left hand bends - it passed the NCT no problem. I know they are only supposed to be checking for road worthiness specifically, but some of the things they pass and some of the stupid things they fail are a cod.

Common enough for wheel bearings to get through an NCT as sometimes they are only detectable with the car actually moving.
