small wedding with large group for 'afters'

My fiance and I are living in Melbourne, Australia. We're coming home to Ireland to get married next August. We are on a budget and we have decided to have a meal for our immediate family and 1 or 2 friends (about 20 people altogether) with drinks and finger food for everyone else (about 130 people) .

What would be the best way to do this? Do hotels offer deals where we can have a small wedding meal for 20 people and a larger finger food/dancing event for more people? Would a hotel be the only choice for this? Does anyone know of any alternatives?

We are getting married in Burt Chapel, in Donegal.

    thanks for your help,

    Laura

    Hi Laura,

We're living in Dublin and are doing exactly the same thing; we are having a civil ceremony and a meal afterwards for immediate family. My initial idea was a registry office and go to a restaurant after but I rang a few hotels and they were really helpful and the best quote , about €55 per person for 3 course meal incl wine, is definitely within our budget.

We're looking at 5* hotels and the great thing is that because we're not going for the standard reception/afters type wedding and we're more a small group having a late lunch we're getting really good value for money. The hotel we've almost decided on recommended we have the ceremony in the afternoon so we have the meal around 4.30 and we can relax for the evening. They are also providing the function room free of charge.

We're planning on doing the party the next day and haven't found a location yet but for 120 people with catered buffet, music and wine (if the venue allows it) we estimate €6-8k. For the wine we plan to take the ferry to France and fill up a borrowed van.

We are thinking of somit similiar ..... 25-30 at church for hopefully an evening Wedding than on to a hotel for a meal in either restaurant or small function area ... only concern is wat to do after meal .... im not interested in a massive evening crowd as i want a small intimate day ....

We asked the hotel where we're having the ceremony and the meal if we can stay around after and have a drink or two. They said no problem. Pick a hotel or restaurant that won't expect you to leave after the meal. If you're having a small wedding then you have more choice about venues so use it as one of the deciding factors.
