    Hey,
I am a mature student doing nursing but I have always wanted to study medicine. I had alot of stuff going on in my life when I was a teenager & never sat my LC, I am planning to go back to study GEM in UCD when I'm 27. I want to study oncology but if I don't get into GEM I plan to study oncology nursing. I have no previous science education, will a nursing degree be sufficient to apply for GEM? Do I need a science background?

I'm not the best person to answer, but here's what I know:

The GAMSAT requires some science study, but I know of nurses studying up, doing it and getting in.

I also know of, and know in person, a few nurses who got into undergrad med as mature students.

Alternatively, repeating the LC is an option.

    Best of luck.

If I was to go back & do my LC it would still go against me that I've never done science. Alternatively I could do a pre university science course & apply as a mature student. I noticed that anyone with a degree can apply for GEM, so is a science background needed? I think I'd prefer to apply to undergraduate instead of GEM because the pre med year would probably be a great help.

LC science can be very doable if you approach it systematically. Plus, nursing degrees contain a fair bit of it (basing this on my friends' lecture notes). If you can do the science in nursing/med, then you can definitely do LC science (in my opinion).

Undergrad graduates in my class have degrees in radiography, physio, pharmacy and even engineering. I spoke to a guy on boards who has a nursing degree and is starting med 1 in UCC on Monday.

Bear in mind that some undergrad ones have no premed. UCC doesn't, and I think one other, maybe Trinity. That said, we all get on fine, and some didn't do LC biology.

Thanks for the info. You're very helpful.
In just have one more question, if I do GEM with my nursing degree, does it matter where the degree is from?
Do they accept degrees from Northern Ireland?

I'm not sure, but if you ask in the GAMSAT thread someone there will definitely know.

    Hope it all goes well!

It varies from college to college. Some are quite particular but for the most part I have personally found that anything goes!:D
