Why are Aer Lingus flights to North America so expensive in October? Any ideas ? For example Boston in October from Shannon to Boston is over €600. In November its €430.

Don't know, but the same route was €800 in August. Expedia has it for around €530 in Oct now.

€600 for a return transatlantic flight is not too bad. If your dates are flexible then you'll probably find flights for pretty cheap. Bear in mind that when the new year comes this route will not be around thanks to cuts from Aer Lingus, in fact Aer Lingus itself is going to be doing very well to be around itself.

Also remember the weekend is always the most expensive time to book flights with Tuesdays and Wednesdays representing the times when flights are at their lowest.

If you really want to save money I'm pretty sure you could go through BA or Virgin Atlantic from Heathrow and Manchester respectively for around €400 or less. Otherwise start appreciating that you have the choice to fly from Shannon and take the €600 flight.

Shannon - New York direct is scrapped and Aer Lingus are loading New York bound passengers either via, SNN-DUB-JFK or else SNN-BOS*-JFK.

This is filling the planes on these routes and driving up ticket prices as they are not forced to discount as heavily with better load figures.

    *Boston to JFK with JetBlue.

Very true last poster. I've been watching DUB-Miami for the last year and finally gave in and booked a BA flight for 700. Had been as low as 400 previously

AFAIK the low season starts on 1st November. I have gone to the US in November the last 3 yrs for this reason. Prices have been a lot cheaper than Sept/Oct. Got San Francisco for €490 for this Nov

[albeit changed to route thru Chicago now, but it's still a good price to the west coast]

The 12th Oct is a federal holiday (Columbus day) so thats probably why flights around that date are expensive. Im flying out the 8th to Boston and got my flights for €430 all in

No, flights on Aer Lingus are all high now. After years of total incompetency and giving away Billions in free and discounted flights to staff and their friends and family, they are trying to make it all up now. I've been trying to get a flight to NY, but almost all of the Aer Lingus options are very expensive, despite this being off peak and many of these flights still have empty seats, but Aer Lingus doesn't care, they'd rather give those seats away for free to staff and their friends and family or don't sell the seats, rather than sell them at a reasonable price.

I'm really dissapointed that Aer Lingus is in such a bad financial situation. I hoped to take either one of their flights to New York or Boston next year. I only found out a few years ago that they had so many flights to North America and was very impressed.
I think €600 is fairly reasonable as you save the hassle of flying from the UK and get to fly on our national carrier before they could very possibly go out of business :(

    IrisJoe,

Well since you only just found out about AE's flights to the US, then you certainly haven't flown them as often as myself and others on the board have over the years. Yes, €600 is fairly reasonable for July\August, but not for Oct/Nov. Oct\Nov. except for Halloween week are typically off-peak times for flights to NY & Boston and most other years flights would cost around €300 to €400, so now seeing prices for €600 to €800 seems quite out of line! But yes, they are close to bankrupt, so they'd rather push up the price and fly empty planes than make some money. I guess this strategy will expedite the bankruptcy process.

My only fear is who will fill the infrastructure void once Aer Lingus is gone. That's why it was intended to be a national airline, why would a US multinational want to have a site here if there are no direct flights?
