I'm having an issue if I try to attach any hard drive/memory stick via usb.

when I plug it in, I get "usb device not recognised". fine. I go to device manager, it comes up under "unknown device". Apparently there are no drivers installed(how I'm not sure, printer and mouse are working fine via usb) I try to update the drivers, it can't find a better match. Same when I put in the recovery cd or connect to windows update. I have uninstalled the device, told it to scan for hardware changes with the same results

by the way, it is a relatively old pc(maybe 4-5 years old) using xp sp3

    any ideas?

You could try force XP to reinstall it's USB controllers.

To do this, go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Device Manager.

Expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers" in the right hand panel.

You will see a serial of controllers and hubs. Right click on each, starting at the bottom hub and working your way up, and choose uninstall.

This will remove the drivers for your USB controllers.

Restart your machine and they should all be automatically reinstalled using a fresh driver. Check in the Device Manager to see if they have come back, if not right click on any item to choose "Scan for hardware changes". This will find the USB controllers and reinstall them.

    Test out a USB drive.

hmmm, this isn't looking all that good. I tried what you suggested above Bob, along with a few other things and then decided to do a fresh install of windows

Even that hasn't fixed it! I tested it with a formatted usb stick, and another one which is in use (both work on another pc)

is there anything else I can try?
