i just had a flick through the 2010 prospectus and i was wondering which group in the course outline for first year is better (considering biology is the only science subject i do in secondary school).
I'm tied between group C (biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics)and group D (biology, chemistry, introduction to earth and ocean sciences and mathematics)
I'm not crazy about physics but i haven't a clue about the introduction to earth and ocean sciences, any suggestions? :D

Oh and what level is the mathematics at?

I'm really sorry that i didn't choose chemistry for my Leaving Certificate but it's too late now, i guess i'll just have to work really hard in college.

I heard that not doing physics in the first year gives you a smaller choice for your second year so i guess it's safer to go with group C

I didn't do chemistry for my LC either and got on fine last year, it's not that bad if you go to most lectures and study a bit towards the end! Physics is split up into two lectures for first year, one for those who have done LC physics, and one for those who haven't; they take the latter at a slower pace.

You can choose whether to do honours or pass maths in 1st science, really there's not much point doing honours maths unless you intend on choosing it again in 2nd year. Pass maths is fine, I did honours maths for the LC and to be honest, pass maths last year was much easier, I thought!

I did the undenominated last year and hadn't done Physics or Chemistry for my LC which I did a long time ago in 1991.
As Meeka said go to lectures and keep up to date with your notes system and you will be fine. I passed both fine and I certainly didn't find them easy but I just did a bit as I went along!!
The maths I found a lot harder after Sem 1 but that was something to do with the lecturers rather than the subject itself. Again, the maths course is set up in a certain way that almost guarantees you a pass if you do a good xmas exam. The same 3-4 questions come up every year and the exam is worth 30% off the end of year result. It really is worth working hard for that one:).
After Sem1 the maths difficulty really does ratchet up a gear but if you know and understand Sem 1 topics and do a good xmas exam you really will be in the clear. Honestly, I was a pass level grade D maths student for my LC almost 19 years ago. If I passed, anyone can:D

Feel free to PM if you have any other questions you need answering:)

Hi, I did undenom science and I did C. C offers the best in choices for 2nd/3rd and 4th yr subjects.I went ot uni woth ZERO knowledge of physics... Dont panic you will be grand....Follow my advice and I swear you will be sorted..

Physics is offered in english and irish, so is chem and hons maths..

    1. Go to the lectures- usually they take attendance...that helps towrds your marks..if they see your down a few marks and need that pass they will look through attendances to help..they dont wanna fail people...

    2. Tutorials- these are designed to help with whats covered in the classes and how to answer exam questions....Physics are great they run them everyday of the week and you can attend as many as you like..again make sure you sign the attendance sheet (think of them passes)... Chemistry usually run a few to. Hand in your assingments on time too.

    3. Labs- make sure you dont miss any cos they do lab exams...hand in your copy on time and make sure the write up is clear and concise and in the past tense. if you do miss a lab get a sick note as this will be included and you wont miss out on marks for attendance in them. labs are worth 15% of your exam.

    4. Lecturers- they may look scary but trust me they are down to earth nice people.... the Prof/Dr. is only a name. They will be only happy if you raise your hand in the class, ask them questions after or call to their offices... Seriously they wanna help, they dont wanna fail someone...

If you have any other questions dont hesitate to ask..
