    Heya

I currently have a 1.4L 2007 golf sportline (upgraded 17s, fogs, stereo, 5 door, 30k kms etc) in showroom condition.

Was thinking of trying to trade it in against a 2007 5dr black GTI if possible.

Any ideas what the cost to change would be with a dealer? Am I mad? Was thinking shouldn't be more than €10k.

The car is perfect other than the sh!te engine, I should've gotten the TFSI with 130bhp at least!

So I'm looking to trade upwards in terms of a decent engine. OR am I mad spending that on a mark V GTI and just wait maybe 2-3 years and then get my 325i or m3?

what was the difference in price when they were both new?

id imagine your cost to change will be relatively close to that

Certainly wouldnt say any more than €10k.

NO you're not mad at all. I imagine you have had great tolerance to put up with that 1.4 for over two years already tbh!

A GTi would be a significant step up in performance alright but look at it this way, you're making up for lost time. Wont be a whole load more to run either. This is because most people would be revving the sh*te out of those 1.4's to get anywhere, which you wouldnt have to do in a GTi!:)

I Imagine the difference in book prices when new was about 13-14k€ but a GTi would have depreciated a nice bit more since then

1.4 Golfs are selling alot quicker than Golf GTis these days. There are also some serious discounts on new unsold MkV GTis too at the moment.

Take this into account when trying to negotitate on price.

id imagine the same is true of any unsold 1.4s if there such a thing

True, probably depends on the spec of the GTi though! That sportline 1.4 could have been up to €24k new as well though. Hard to know what the going of one would be now

I think those Mk5 1.4 base models were going for around €16k when they were around. Probably gone now though

Heya lads thanks a million for the replies. I've put the car on adverts just to see what offers i get so I can judge what it's really worth.

If I got a decent amount from private sale then I wouldn't have to upgrade to GTI but maybe head over to UK and get a bmw 330Ci or something...

Judging from the pics, she's in perfect condition alright so there should be some good genuine interest from people who dont want a whole load of power, but a nice car none the less:)

    Good luck with the sale!

I changed from a Volkswagen Golf 1.4ltr to a GTi and id never go back to a 1.4ltr again. The car itself is fantastic to drive and so comfortable and powerful which is nice for over taking. The only downside is the alloy wheels with the Gti. I've scratched two of mine on the same side but i was in a bad mood one night and took it out on the car and once i clean it all up they look crap now with the marks.

Difference in book value between a 07 Golf 1.4i (Comf spec, Sportline doesn't list) and an 07 Golf GTI is €8,650 - based on same mileage.

Heya thanks for the feedback. It's in fantastic nick as I've OCD and am always cleaning it (being black doesn't help!) but it's just the damn engine - it's like a lawnmower!! If I could swap out just the engine for the 1.4 TFSI I'd be delighted

Hey thanks for that but I think that's for the 1.4TFSI engine? the bog standard 1.4 is mine. Car was listed at about €25k when i got it and think the starting GTI was about €39k.

Fair enough but there was just a fair auld premium to go up to a 140bhp 1.4TSi when new. In terms of going for another golf of similar age though, definitely get a GTi. Little difference in price really and probably a more reliable engine too!

Yeah sportline was renamed to GT sport or something in 2008 with a few added extras to the spec, and rear privacy glass etc.

My 2007 one differs with 2006 model with silver buttons on the stereo which means it's the 80bhp engine with AC as standard etc.

    Pitty that extra 5bhp wasn't 50bhp :p

Or 10 bhp even! Twas odd, the new Leon, back in 06 or whatever, got the 86bhp 1.4, as did the new fabia and ibiza but the golf and octavia didnt!

Even the MK6 golf has the 80bhp version, very odd. Probably gonna be replaced very soon though..

Figures I quoted are for the 1.4 80bhp version. 1.4TSi doesn't list in the book until 2008.

Book value I refer to is the dealers "book" - September edition.

    If i didn't change would a remap on a 1.4 80bhp make much difference?

Are there any mods i can get made to the engine to bring the bhp up to 100+, even if cost a few grand?

A remap would do feck all for you mate, about 1hp extra. Not sure on the mounts and dumping a new engine in. I'd say it'd be messy, throw it on donedeal.ie at a competitive price and see what happens.
