My insurance was due to expire on the 6th Sept. I renewed and paid online on the 31st August. I wasn't going to be using my car from the 9th to the 18th because I was on holidays. I get back to Ireland to find that the broker hasn't sent out the new insurance disk yet. Rang them to see what happened and was given the "oh it must have gotten lost in an office somewhere, I'll send out a new one" response.

He assured me that having paid up, I'm still on cover but I know if I get stopped at a checkpoint I'll likely be read the riot act by the gardai. What's the deal here if they stop me and I explain the situation? Had thought about printing out the email of the receipt I got when renewing in case I have to show some proof. I know I'd probably be asked to turn up to a garda station with proof of insurance within X days. Presumably then if my disk doesn't show up for a further week, I get the summons in the post.. Surely someone must have found themselves in this situation in the past?

Pick up the phone, Call your insurance co. or broker and ask them to fax or email a letter to you confirming you have insurance cover. They will do it for you while your on the phone..happens all the time. Then put the letter in the glove box and you can show it to a garda if required.

    that also works :)

Just rang them back now and got a much more helpful person than I did yesterday. She's going to email me a copy of the disk.

A copy of the disc? I would prefer a letter saying you were covered than a copy of the disc.... A guard would have a field day with a copied disc

If the broker is not far from you, call in and collect it from them. At least that way you know you will have it instead of all this messing about by them.

And I'd doubt an e-mailed copy of the disc would hold much water if you were queried by a Garda.
