Domestic Well on new build

With all the recent talk of water charges etc. we are reviewing our water situation on our new build, which is now at first floor level. We had planned on using the mains water supply which passes by our gate and had stated this on our planning permission application.

We are now considering boring our own well (assuming water is available!), we have also been granted permission for a septic tank on site.

Provided we follow the relevant regulations re: distance from the septic tank percolation area (any details regarding these rules would be appreciated), can we go ahead and sink our own well or do we have to apply for planning permission?

And finally, our contributions to council included 2184 Euro for water. If we sank our own well would we still be required to pay this? I have not paid any contributions yet

    Cheers,
    Lialwarrior.

I'd like to know this too as we have an old capped well on our property that I'd considering re-opening if water charges came in.

Although I'm cynical enough to think that even if you had your own well, they'd still bill you a water charge under the "common good" (e.g. if a watermain runs past your house, the fire service might need to tap into it to get water if your house was on fire and thus you have to pay for this "possible" use) or some other crap reason like that.

Seeing as those of us who live on their own plots of land (and are heretics according to the Greens sustainability theories), could we seek a reduction in a water charge as we have to pay to get our septic tanks emptied unlike the urbanites who just flush the loo and forget about it. Sorry rant over.

My engineer got a reply back from the council stating that if I pay the original contribution amount less the contribution figure for the water (approx 2K), that upon completion of the house, provided I produce evidence that we are using our own well i.e. receipts from the well drilling company etc. They will amend my file to show all contributions have been paid in full.

So this 2K saved :D will now go towards drilling our own well!
