I think we all have done it at some point, get so convinced of something as believe it to be true when in reality it's only our opinion, however some people seem to take this to extreme. I know of one guy here who I can't take anything he says at face value anymore. This guy is a friend of ours for the last couple of years but this habit of his (along with some other factors) is starting let's say to put a dampener on our friendship. I'm pretty sure he's not deliberately lying but so many times he has stated and in fact insisted something to be definitely true when in fact he is wrong with alarming frequency, he even gets a bit annoyed when he sees the doubting look on your face, and it doesn't seem to register with him that he has been proven wrong so many times. I've two explanations for this, one is that he just likes to have an answer to any question regardless of whether he really knows the answer and the other related to this - is that he somehow makes out his opinions on things to be facts.

    Explanations?
You mean theories or possible explanations?

    That's your opinion, not fact

Well as Brummytom did you can pick holes in my post if you want to be pedantic about it. But It's not an opinion that the main subject of my post my friend constantly saying things that are wrong, it's a fact (or pretty much a fact as a fact can be).

Yeah know a guy like that too, he makes stuff completely up too, funny at times but can be dangeorus also. The friend in this thread was someone we relied on when we first moved to Portugal as he was also our translator here and some of his 'supposed' facts that we relied on cost us a lot of money. We know better now than to listen to him now but damage was done when we albeit naively trusted him.

    fact.

Well my opinion is that you just saw an opportunity to join the bandwagon and get another boot in. Not very original really. But that's just my opinion.

I don't think anyone wants to get the boot in.

I understand what you mean, and people like you mentioned are quite irritating after a while.

It's easy to make a mistake when it comes to facts but when mistakes are made we should learn to check our info in future.

Would those who seem to think GOD does exist and if you say, "But how can you know," they look at you as if you have ten heads. I find that so many folks who "believe" in god also state it as if it is 100 percent fact, when it cannot be.

Pretty much everything said on t'internet should be treated as opinion unless otherwise stated. FACT.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,437 ✭✭✭luckylucky

    well...it could be.

Think this is what Walshb was getting at, it could be, but it's an opinion - not an established fact.

no it could be an established fact.

we just dont know it yet.

Well it is of my onion that if it was an established fact then we would all believe it and hold it to be true and in fact there would be some sort of definitive proof that we would all hold to be proof.

So it's not an established fact then as this is not the case. Also I think you are mixing up something that is an either or case.

Yes either there is a God or there isn't, but until you know for sure one way or another it's not a FACT. That's my onions on it anyway.

That's my point, it cannot be true or false until we die and then maybe it will become clear.
So, why do folks state it as being TRUE?

To inject a semi serious point to this discussion. The OP has realised what most of realise at some point in our lives that it's all opinion. As someone said: Opinions are like ass**les, everyone has one.

The truth?..........Well the truth is out there and there it stays because no one knows where to find it.

Your friend may be guilty of exaggeration but in truth (a rare find) he is simply a more extreme version of us all. One of the myths of the internet is that your opinion matters and that we all have something to contribute. We don't, it's all lost in the babble of cyberspace.

You won't remember this post, ten minutes after you read it. I won't remember it by the end of today. It's all hot air but we do it to pass the time.

Of course that's just my opinion!
