Where would one get an extremely durable, good quality strong bike lock? Halfords would be a guess but I decided to ask here first :).

Kryptonite locks are regarded highly - have a look at www.wiggle.co.uk and and www.chainreactioncycles.com

And after you've been on either website, request an overdraft/increase on your credit card limit.

There's a couple of shops in Camden Street but don't put too much fate in a bike lock. If your bike is valuable or just looks 'sexy' it will go regardless of what lock you put on it. You can't go too far wrong with a Kyrptonite .

Fate and bike locks go well together. Don't put too much faith in it though.

    +1 on Kryptonite.

    DFD.

Only the new york range on kryptonite.

    Some kryptonite locks are ****e.

Magnum and some abus locks are great too.

There is a handcuff type lock you can get too, they are great.

    BUT ITS E50 MINIMUM.

Not according to the reviews I've read.

ABUS Granite I think is one that used to be highly rated.

I haven't seen any recent lock reviews.

+1 on the Kryptonite. Motorbike chains are good too, tend to be a bit cheaper than bike locks, I leave one at work, and use the Kryptonite mini-D when I'm in town.

    as the rest have said

if they want it enough , no lock good enough

    a deterant ( spelling ) at best

As an extra deterrent, make sure your bike is good and mucky before locking it anywhere public. Those thievy-joes are a fickle bunch.

I think it can be effective to reduce the resale value of your bike too. Unless you really plan on selling your bike on at some point in the near enough future, and it spends a lot of it's time locked up without supervision, inflicting cosmetic (non-detrimental to function) damage on your bike makes it less likely to get stolen.

    Big locks.

    Nitromors / spraypaint.

If the choice is between having a pretty bike stolen or an ugly one to get home on (that both function identically) I know which I choose.

bikes =/= women. Never put nitromors on your partner. Do not feed your bike kebabs. simple.

Big lock + don't clean it + insurance?

Would you uglify your wife to stop her being stolen? "Here darling, have another kebab".

Still confused about the difference between bikes and women?

    Your poor poor wife. :(

i'd recommend this abus granit steel o flex

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Abus_Granit_Steel_O_Flex_1000_100cm_Cable_Lock/5220000043/

working as a courier have been using this since early 2005. disregarding questions of security (i'd agree with uglification/paint/stickers) that's a seriously long life time. it also comes in three different lengths so you can get one that'll fit comfortably around your waist.

also - personalise your bike somehow (change components/wheels/saddle) and photograph it so you can easily poster it when and if it does get nicked. or if you get drunk and leave it somewhere, which i've done...

No need for confusion - if you're having a good ride, it must be the bike......
