For reasons I won't get into, I am required to have 10.5.8 installed on a USB HDD. It isn't going smoothly.

    Round One:

-Clean Install of 10.5.0. Working fine. Download 10.5.8 Combined Updater, run.

    - Installs. Boots to login window, and wierdness begins. The login window appears for about a second, complete with top menubar that just says "loginwindow". It then disappears, and goes back to the blue screen with the spinning... thing, then back to login window for a second, then back to blue, and so on.

    - Nothing could fix this. Gave up.

    Round Two:

    - Archive and Install of 10.5.0. Fine.

    - Run 10.5.8 Combo.

    - System boots, thinks for a while, then reboots. Then it just hangs at the grey screen with the Apple and the spinning... thing. Forever. Just spinning.

(For what it's worth, I'm using the Combo Updater DMG downloaded from Apple's site).

    Dear God, someone help me.

you may have got one of those dodgy 10.5.0 installers.. try going to 10.5.4 first or less...

I wonder have you tried a Firewire drive - apple mac's were able to boot off firewire a long time ago, so it might be more stable.

Is there anywhere to get the 10.5.4 update? Software Update only offers the 10.5.8 Combined (and is it worth downloading a fresh one with Software Update? I have a 3Mbps line, file is 760MB).

Don't have a Firewire drive, getting one presently is not an option.
